Leonard Barkman
Leonard A. Barkman (July 12, 1920 – January 5, 1979) was a politician in Manitoba, Canada. He was a member of the Manitoba legislature from 1962 to 1973, sitting as a member of the Liberal Party. He was the first Mennonite elected to the Manitoba assembly from an area formerly known as the East Reserve, which had at one time been set aside by the federal government for settlement by Mennonite immigrants. Biography Leonard A. Barkman was born July 12, 1920 in Steinbach, Manitoba, the son of Jacob F. Barkman and Margaret Dueck, both natives of Manitoba. Barkman was educated in Steinbach-area schools, operated a small business in the city and married Agnes Reimer in 1945she died May 2, 2002. The 1973 Manitoba general election was held on June 28, 1973 to elect Members of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Manitoba, Canada. It was won by the social-democratic New Democratic Party, which took 31 of 57 seats to win government in its own right for the first time. The Progressive Conservative Party finished second with 21, while the Manitoba Liberal Party took the remaining five. A right-of-centre municipal organization known as the Independent Citizens' Election Committee convinced the Progressive Conservative and Liberal parties to avoid competing against each other in certain Winnipeg-area ridings, such that a single "anti-socialist" alternative to the NDP could be offered. Robert Banman
Robert "Bob" Banman (born January 10, 1945 in Winnipeg, Manitoba) is a politician from Manitoba, Canada. He was a member of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba from 1973 to 1986, and served as a cabinet minister in the government of Sterling Lyon. The son of Jacob G. Banman and Barbara Enns, he was raised in Steinbach, Manitoba. He worked as an automobile dealer after graduating from high school and was on the Steinbach Town Council from 1970 to 1973. In 1968, Banman married Joanne Baerg. He was first elected to the Manitoba legislature in the provincial election of 1973, defeating incumbent Liberal Leonard Barkman by about 550 votes in the rural riding of La Verendrye. La Verendrye is a provincial electoral division in the Canadian province of Manitoba. It was created by redistribution in 1879, and has existed since that time. La Verendrye is located southeastern region of Manitoba. It is bordered to the west by Dawson Trail, Emerson, Steinbach, and St. Paul, to the north by Lac Du Bonnet, and to the east by the province of Ontario.
