Leo Meyer (politician)
Leo Meyer (1873-1964) was a politician in Texas and Oklahoma and was the first Jew elected to statewide public office in Oklahoma. Early years Meyer was born in New York City to recent German immigrant parents. After attending high school in Brooklyn, New York, he moved to Texas at age 16, where he eventually went into the mercantile and cotton business in Bellville, Texas in 1890. In 1895 he married Margaret Lewis of Nelsonville, Texas and was becoming active in local politics in Bellville, eventually being elected as mayor. Oklahoma years The 1900 Galveston hurricane destroyed his family's business, so Meyer and his family moved to Sayre, Oklahoma where he worked as the manager of the Dixie Dry Goods store. He also continued his work in Democratic party politics serving on the town's first board of trustees before being elected as the town's first mayor in 1905, an office he held until 1906. Oklahoma State Auditor
The Oklahoma State Auditor and Inspector is an elected Constitutional officer for the U.S. State of Oklahoma. The State Auditor and Inspector is responsible for auditing and prescribing bookkeeping standards of all government agencies and county treasurers within Oklahoma. The office in its current form is a consolidation of the office of State Auditor with that of the office of State Examiner and Inspector, both of which dated back to statehood in 1907. The two positions were combined in 1979 after passage of State Question 510 in 1975. Tom Daxon was the first person to hold the combined office and the first Republican as all previous occupants of either position were Democrats. Guthrie, Oklahoma
Guthrie is a city and county seat in Logan County, Oklahoma, United States, and a part of the Oklahoma City Metroplex. The population was 10,191 at the 2010 census, a 2.7 percent increase from the figure of 9,925 in the 2000 census. First known as a railroad station stop, after the Land Run of 1889, Guthrie immediately gained 10,000 new residents, who began to develop the town. It was rapidly improved and was designated as the territorial capital, and in 1907 as the first state capital of Oklahoma. In 1910, state voters chose the larger Oklahoma City as the new capital in a special election. Guthrie is nationally significant for its collection of late 19th and early 20th century commercial architecture. Temple Israel is a Reform Jewish congregation located at 2004 East 22nd Place in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Temple Israel website. Founded in 1914, the synagogue affiliated with the Union for Reform Judaism in 1915, and constructed its first building on the corner of 14th and Cheyenne Streets in 1919. Early rabbis included Jacob Menkes, Charles Latz, Samuel Kaplan, Jacob Krohngold, and Benjamin Kelsen. In 1932, Temple Israel constructed a new building on South Cheyenne. The Mid-continent oil field is a broad area containing hundreds of oil fields in Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas. The area, which consists of various geological strata and diverse trap types, was discovered and exploited during the first half of the 20th century. Joseph Blatt
Joseph Blatt was an American rabbi, civic leader, and professor who was the longest serving rabbi of Temple B'nai Israel in Oklahoma City. He was inducted into the Oklahoma Hall of Fame in 1932. Early life Joseph Blatt was born in 1878 in Ohio. In 1901, he became a rabbi and worked at a temple in Georgia. Oklahoma Rabbi Blatt moved to Oklahoma City in 1906. He became the rabbi for the congregation that would build the Temple B'nai Israel there and served in that position until 1946. From 1906 to 1916 he was the only full-time rabbi in the state of Oklahoma.
