Leo (Chinese Astronomy)
The modern constellation Leo lies across one of the quadrants symbolized by the Vermilion Bird of the South (南方朱雀, ''Nán Fāng Zhū Què''), and Three Enclosures (三垣, ''Sān Yuán''), that divide the sky in traditional Chinese uranography. The name of the western constellation in modern Chinese is 狮子座 (''shī zi zuò''), which means "the lion constellation". Leo (constellation)
Leo is one of the constellations of the zodiac, between Cancer (constellation), Cancer the crab to the west and Virgo (constellation), Virgo the maiden to the east. It is located in the Northern celestial hemisphere. Its name is Latin for lion, and to the ancient Greeks represented the Nemean Lion killed by the mythical Greek hero Heracles meaning 'Glory of Hera' (known to the ancient Romans as Hercules) as one of his Twelve Labours, twelve labors. Its old astronomical symbol is (♌︎). One of the 48 constellations described by the 2nd-century astronomer Ptolemy, Leo remains one of the 88 modern constellations today, and one of the most easily recognizable due to its many bright stars and a distinctive shape that is reminiscent of the crouching lion it depicts. Upsilon Leonis (υ Leo) is a star in the zodiac constellation of Leo. It is visible to the naked eye with an apparent visual magnitude of 4.33. The distance to this star, as determined using parallax measurements, is about 182 light years. At that distance, the visual magnitude of the star is diminished by an estimated extinction factor of 0m.02 because of interstellar dust. With an age of around 4 billion years, this star has evolved into a G-type giant star with a stellar classification of G9 III. It has 2.6 times the Sun's mass, but has expanded to 11 times the solar radius and shines with 56 times the luminosity of the Sun at an effective temperature of 4,842 K. Tau Leonis (τ Leo) is a star in the zodiac constellation of Leo. Because it is located near the ecliptic, it is subject to occultations by the Moon. It has an apparent visual magnitude of 5.00, which is bright enough to be seen with the naked eye. The distance to this star, as estimated using parallax measurements, is 560 light years. It is moving closer to the Sun with a radial velocity of −9 km/s. This G-type giant star has a stellar classification of G8- IIIa and currently resides on the red giant branch. 93 Leonis (93 Leo) is a binary star in the constellation Leo. Its apparent magnitude is 4.522. Based on the system's parallax, 93 Leonis is located about 233 light-years (71 parsecs) away. 93 Leonis is a double-lined spectroscopic binary. Two components are known to exist, because their spectral lines shift periodically, due to the Doppler effect. The two stars are a G-type red giant and an A-type main-sequence star. They complete an orbit once every 71.69 days. The system is also known to be an RS Canum Venaticorum variable, due to its binarity. For that reason, it has been given the variable star designation DQ Leonis.
