Lenox High School
The Old Lenox High School building, also formerly known as the Lenox Elementary School and the Marguerite E. Cameron Elementary School, is a historic school building at 109 Housatonic Street in Lenox, Massachusetts. The building was constructed in 1908, and housed the town's high school until 1966, when Lenox Memorial High School opened. The building had been converted into an assisted living facility, and then converted again in 2017 into low-income-housing apartments for seniors - now known as Lenox Schoolhouse Apartments. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004. Lenox, Massachusetts
Lenox is a town in Berkshire County, Massachusetts. The town is based in Western Massachusetts and part of the Pittsfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 5,095 at the 2020 census. Lenox is the site of Shakespeare & Company and Tanglewood, summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Lenox includes the villages of New Lenox and Lenoxdale, and is a tourist destination during the summer. History The area was inhabited by Mahicans, Algonquian speakers who largely lived along the Hudson and Housatonic Rivers. Lenox Village Historic District
The Lenox Village Historic District is a historic district encompassing the historic village center of Lenox, Massachusetts. Settled in the 1760s, Lenox was the second county seat of Berkshire County, a role it served until 1868, and its early economic success revolved around this role and local mining industries. The village center is reflective of this early role, as well as its later role as a hub for wealthy vacationers. The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2022. Lenox Memorial High School is a public high school located in Lenox, Massachusetts, United States, founded in 1803. Since 1966 it has shared a campus with the town's middle school. The schools are officially known as ''Lenox Memorial Middle and High School''. History The first school master arrived in Lenox in 1770. Lenox Memorial High School has its origins in the founding of Lenox Academy in 1803. Acquiring a reputation for excellence, the Academy drew students from throughout the region and beyond. Already serving as the town's secondary school, the Academy officially became its public high school in 1866. Lenox Academy is a historic school building at 65 Main Street in Lenox, Massachusetts. Built in 1802-03 as a private academy, it was the first secondary school to open in Berkshire County. It was subsequently used as the town's high school, and now houses offices. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. Description and history The former Lenox Academy building stands on the western edge of the commercial center of Lenox, on the west side of Main Street between Sunset and Cliffwood Streets. It is a two-story wood-frame structure, with a hip roof and clapboarded exterior. The hip roof is truncated and topped at the center by a two-stage belfry. The main facade is five bays wide, with sash windows in the outer bays. Jennie Louise Touissant Welcome (January 10, 1885 – July 22, 1956), born Jennie Louise Van Der Zee and also known as Madame E. Toussaint Welcome, was an African American visual artist who made influential photographs and films with her husband. She is associated with the Harlem Renaissance. Van Der Zee, who referred to herself as "the foremost female artist of the race," is recognized as being one of the only African American women filmmakers from the silent film industry. She and her husband, Ernest Touissant Welcome, established their own art school, photographic studio, and film production business. They produced films and paintings of African American soldiers of World War I. The film, a 12-part documentary, was titled '' Doing Their Bit''.
