Lena Frank Dick
Lena Frank Dick ( - 1965) was a Washoe people, Washoe basket maker best known for her tight weaves and figurative designs. Her baskets were primarily aesthetic as opposed to utilitarian. Biography Lena Frank Dick was born in 1889 to Charlie and Lucy Frank. Her family belonged to the Antelope Valley Washoe people, who lived primarily in Nevada and California. She spent her life in the Antelope Valley, located on the outskirts of what is now Los Angeles County, California. As a teen, Lena married George Emm, with whom she had her only child, Juanita. However, Emm left following Juanita's birth. In 1906 Lena remarried Levi Dick, a construction worker. Lena and Levi remained married until his death in 1963. Lena withdrew from the public in the time following his death, and in 1965 she also passed. One of three daughters, Lena and her sisters were taught by their mother at a young age to weave. Coleville is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Mono County, California, United States. It is located at an elevation of in the Antelope Valley on the West Walker River. Dat So La Lee
Louisa Keyser, or Dat So La Lee (ca. 1829 - December 6, 1925) was a celebrated Native American basket weaver. A member of the Washoe people in northwestern Nevada, her basketry came to national prominence during the Arts and Crafts movement and the "basket craze" of the early 20th century. Many museums of art and anthropology preserve and display her baskets, such as the Penn Museum in Philadelphia, the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C., the Nevada State Museum in Carson City, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Meaning of name Dat So La Lee was a ''nom d'art''. There are several theories about the derivation of this name.
