The Govett-Brewster Art Gallery is a contemporary art museum at New Plymouth, Taranaki, New Zealand. The gallery receives core funding from the New Plymouth District Council. Govett-Brewster is recognised internationally for contemporary art. History The Govett-Brewster Art Gallery had its beginnings through a gift by New Plymouth resident Monica Brewster (nee Govett 1886–1973) who transferred £50,000 in stocks, funds, shares and securities to the City of New Plymouth in 1962. The fund was to establish and develop a public art gallery (in1970, the year the gallery eventually opened, she would make a second bequest for £72,000 to start a permanent art collection). In 1967 a 24 year old Australian teacher John Maynard arrived in New Plymouth having been appointed director to develop a contemporary art gallery. Vincent Ward (director)
Vincent Ward (born 16 February 1956) is a New Zealand film director, screenwriter and artist. His films have received international recognition at both the Academy Awards and the Cannes Film Festival. Life and career Vincent Ward was born on 16 February 1956 near Greytown, New Zealand. He attended Ilam School of Fine Arts at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand where he received a Diploma in Fine Arts (with Honours) in 1981. In 2014 the University of Canterbury awarded him an Honorary Doctorate in Fine Arts and an adjunct professorship. In 1978, at the age of 21, he shot ''A State of Siege'', his debut short-feature film, which adapted a novel by Janet Frame. Pae White
Pae White (born 1963) is an American multimedia visual artist who is known for her unique portrayal of nature and rather mundane objects through her creations of suspended mobiles. She currently lives and works between Sonoma CountySonoma County, California, Retrieved 12 August 2021. and Los Angeles, California. Early life and education White was born in 1963 in Pasadena, California, Pasadena, California. She attained a Bachelor of Arts degree from Scripps College in 1985. In 1990 she studied at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. In 1991 she attained a Masters of Fine Art from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. Ikon Gallery
The Ikon Gallery () is an English gallery of contemporary art, located in Brindleyplace, Birmingham. It is housed in the Grade II listed, neo-gothic former Oozells Street Board School, designed by John Henry Chamberlain in 1877. Ikon was set up to encourage the public to engage in contemporary art. As a result, the gallery delivers an off-site Education and Interpretation scheme to educate audiences, and to promote artists and their work. The gallery is open every day of the week except Mondays, though it opens on bank holiday Mondays. Featured artworks include all forms of media including sound, sculpture and photography as well as paintings. Exhibitions rotate throughout the year so that as many pieces can be displayed as possible. Ikon is a registered charity which is partly funded by Birmingham City Council and Arts Council of England. Darcy Lange
Darcy Bruce Espie Lange (22 September 1946 – 8 August 2005) was a New Zealand artist born in Urenui. Lange studied at the Elam School of Fine Arts (1964–1967) creating hard-edge abstract sculptures before studying at the Royal College of Art in London and shifting his focus to moving image and photography. Career Beginning in the United Kingdom in the 1970s, Lange pioneered a social documentary practice with video, filming people in working environments such as schools, factories and farms. Among this body of work, ''Work Studies in Schools'' (1976–1977) has sustained significant attention. Beginning in 1976 in Birmingham, Lange videotaped a number of school lessons in action across three schools, each representing a different social class.
