A hypocorism ( or ; from Ancient Greek: (), from (), 'to call by pet names', sometimes also ''hypocoristic'') or pet name is a name used to show affection for a person. It may be a diminutive form of a person's name, such as ''Izzy'' for Isabel or ''Bob (given name), Bob'' for Robert, or it may be unrelated. In linguistics, the term can be used more specifically to refer to the morphological process by which the standard form of the word is transformed into a form denoting affection, or to words resulting from this process. Leonard Gordon Goodman (born 25 April 1944) is an English professional ballroom dancer, dance judge, and coach. He has appeared as head judge on the television dance programmes ''Strictly Come Dancing'', a programme where various celebrities compete for the glitter ball trophy, from its beginning in 2004 until 2016 and ''Dancing with the Stars'' from 2005 until 2022. He also runs a ballroom dance school in Dartford, Kent. Early life Goodman was born in London. He moved to Blackfen when he was six years old and later attended Westwood Secondary Modern School, where he was a member of the cricket team. Goodman was one of three children and the only child of the family to stay in the family business, as his other siblings all moved to Newcastle. Leonard James "Len" Reynolds (19 November 1923 – 14 July 1980) was an Australian politician. Born in Harden, New South Wales, he was educated at state schools before attending the University of Sydney. He undertook military service from 1943 to 1946 and was subsequently a teacher and education lecturer. In 1958, he was selected as the Labor candidate for the seat of Barton, which party leader H. V. Evatt was leaving as it was perceived to be too marginal. Reynolds won the seat and held it until 1966, when he was defeated by Liberal candidate Bill Arthur William Tevlin Arthur (16 April 1918 – 28 February 1982) was an Australian politician. Len Phillips
Leonard Horace Phillips (11 September 1922 – 9 December 2011) was a professional footballer who won three caps for the England national team. Phillips was born in Shoreditch, London. At club level, he played his entire professional career for Portsmouth, and was a member of the championship-winning teams of 1949 and 1950. After his professional career, Phillips went on to play non-league football for Poole Town, Chelmsford City, Bath City and Waterlooville, the latter while working as a lathe operator at De Havilland's works in Portsmouth. He made his last appearance in senior football at the age of 44, in a 3-0 win for Waterlooville against Andover on 24 September 1966. Leonard David McCluskey (born 23 July 1950) is a British trade unionist. He was General Secretary of Unite the Union, the largest affiliate and a major donor to the Labour Party. As a young adult, he spent some years working in the Liverpool Docks for the Mersey Docks and Harbour Company prior to becoming a full-time union official for the Transport and General Workers' Union (T&GWU) in 1979. Leonard Charles Huia Lye (; 5 July 1901 – 15 May 1980) was a New Zealand artist known primarily for his experimental films and kinetic sculpture. His films are held in archives including the New Zealand Film Archive, British Film Institute, Museum of Modern Art in New York City, and the Pacific Film Archive at University of California, Berkeley. Lye's sculptures are found in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Albright-Knox Art Gallery and the Berkeley Art Museum. Leonard Bernard "Butch / Len" Levy (February 19, 1921 – February 9, 1999) was an American professional athlete. The 1941 NCAA heavyweight wrestling champion and 1942 AAU champion, he was selected by the Cleveland Rams of the National Football League (NFL) in the fourth round of the 1942 NFL Draft. He instead enlisted in the United States Navy and played for one of that branch's organized military service teams, the Great Lakes Bluejackets. Following his discharge from the Navy, Levy played two seasons for the NFL's Rams, winning the NFL Championship in 1945. He then played for the Los Angeles Dons of the All-America Football Conference (AAFC) from 1947 to 1948, earning First-team All-AAFC honors in the latter year — his final season of professional football. Early life King matriculated from St Joseph's Memorial School at age 14, then worked at Shell Company as a clerk.
