Lemuel Harris
Lemuel (Lem) Harris (December 15, 1907 in Wales – July 24, 1996) was a politician in Manitoba, Canada. He was a member of the Manitoba legislature from 1959 to 1969, representing the social democratic CCF and its successor, the NDP. Harris moved with his family to Canada at a young age. He worked for the Burns meat packing plant in Winnipeg. He was from a trade-union background and represented a strongly working-class constituency during his time in office. Lement Harris
Lement Upham "Lem" Harris (March 1, 1904 – 21 September 2002) was a member of the American Communist Party. Biography Lement U. Harris, known to his friends as "Lem," was the son of John Francis Harris (c. 1875–1941), the founder of the Wall Street brokerage firm of Harris, Winthrop, and Company. He graduated from Harvard University in 1926. Harris went to work on a farm in Pennsylvania for three years. He was invited to Russia by Harold Ware, one of the American Communist Party's leading agricultural experts. He returned to the United States convinced that the Soviet system was superior to the West. Once back in the United States he conducted a nine-month survey of life in rural agricultural America. They published their results in The American Farmer. Harris then joined the Communist Party and remained a member until his death on September 21, 2002. The Manitoba Historical Society is a historical society in the province of Manitoba, Canada. It was created in 1879 by an act of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba, and describes itself as "the oldest organization in western Canada devoted to the promotion of public interest in, and preservation of, the region’s historical resources". The society publishes a journal called ''Manitoba History'' and presents an annual literary award called the Margaret McWilliams Award. The current president of the society is Gordon Goldsborough. Edward Schreyer
Edward Richard Schreyer (born December 21, 1935) is a Canadian politician, diplomat, and statesman who served as Governor General of Canada, the 22nd since Canadian Confederation. Schreyer was born and educated in Manitoba, and was first elected to the province's legislative assembly in 1958. He later moved into federal politics, winning a seat in the House of Commons, but returned to Manitoba in 1969 to become leader of the provincial New Democratic Party (NDP). The party then won that year's provincial election and Schreyer became the 16th premier of Manitoba, aged 33. In 1978 he was appointed Governor General by Queen Elizabeth II on the recommendation of Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, to replace Jules Léger, and he occupied the post until succeeded by Jeanne Sauvé in 1984. 1959 Manitoba General Election
The 1959 Manitoba general election was held on May 14, 1959 to elect 57 members to the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba, Canada. It resulted in a majority victory for the incumbent Progressive Conservatives under the leadership of Premier Dufferin Roblin. It was the first time since the 1914 election that the Tories won an outright majority in the province. Roblin's Tories won 36 seats against 11 for the Liberal-Progressives, led by former Premier Douglas Campbell, and 10 for the social democratic Co-operative Commonwealth Federation led by Lloyd Stinson. The Tories took 25 percent more votes than it had received in the previous election just one year beforenbut took 40 percent more seats than it had won in 1958.
