Leland Kirkemo
Leland Erwin Kirkemo (28 May 1920 – 23 September 2010) was a United States Navy captain. As the skipper of the amphibious assault ship in 1970, he was responsible for the recovery of the Apollo 13 spacecraft and crew. Early life Leland Erwin Kirkemo was born in Wahena Township, Cass County, Minnesota, on 28 May 1920, the son of Thorleif Kirkemo and his wife Lena ( Lone). His father was an immigrant from Norway who had arrived in the United States in 1903 with his family. Kirkemo grew up in Itasca County, Minnesota, where his father was a mailman and his mother was a schoolteacher who taught at the small, one-room local school. He went to Deer River High School, from which he graduated in 1936. Work was hard to find during the Great Depression, and he found employment with the Civilian Conservation Corps, a relief program run by the federal government. Cass County, Minnesota
Cass County is a county in the central part of the U.S. state of Minnesota. As of the 2020 census, the population was 30,066. Its county seat is Walker. The county was formed in 1851, and was organized in 1897. Cass County is included in the Brainerd, MN Micropolitan Statistical Area. A substantial part of the Leech Lake Indian Reservation is in the county. History Cass County was created on September 1, 1851, by the Minnesota Territory legislature, although its government was not organized until 1897. The county was formed of areas partitioned from Dakota, Mahkatah, Pembina and Wahnata Counties. It was named for Lewis Cass, a Michigan political figure of the 19th century. Sandia Base
Sandia Base was the principal nuclear weapons installation of the United States Department of Defense from 1946 to 1971. It was located on the southeastern edge of Albuquerque, New Mexico. For 25 years, the top-secret Sandia Base and its subsidiary installation, Manzano Base, carried on the atomic weapons research, development, design, testing, and training commenced by the Manhattan Project during World War II. Fabrication, assembly, and storage of nuclear weapons was also done at Sandia Base. The base played a key role in the United States nuclear deterrence capability during the Cold War. VAH-7
RVAH-7 was a reconnaissance attack (heavy) squadron of the U.S. Navy. Originally established as Composite Squadron Seven (VC-7) on 10 August 1950, it was redesignated as Heavy Attack Squadron Seven (VAH-7) on 1 November 1955 and was redesignated again as Reconnaissance Attack (Heavy) Squadron Seven (RVAH-7) on 1 December 1964. The squadron was disestablished on 28 September 1979. Operational history VC-7 VC-7 was established at Naval Air Station Moffett Field, California in October 1950 and was initially equipped with the AJ-1 Savage for a primary mission role of carrier-based nuclear strike against strategic targets ashore. NAS Moffett Field
Moffett Federal Airfield , also known as Moffett Field, is a joint civil-military airport located in an unincorporated part of Santa Clara County, California, United States, between northern Mountain View and northern Sunnyvale. On November 10, 2014, NASA announced that it would be leasing of the airfield property to Google for 60 years. The airport is near the south end of San Francisco Bay, northwest of San Jose.
