Legionella
''Legionella'' is a genus of pathogenic gram-negative bacteria that includes the species '' L. pneumophila'', causing legionellosis (all illnesses caused by ''Legionella'') including a pneumonia-type illness called Legionnaires' disease and a mild flu-like illness called Pontiac fever. ''Legionella'' may be visualized with a silver stain or cultured in cysteine-containing media such as buffered charcoal yeast extract agar. It is common in many environments, including soil and aquatic systems, with at least 50 species and 70 serogroups identified. These bacteria, however, are not transmissible from person to person; furthermore, most people exposed to the bacteria do not become ill. Most outbreaks are traced to poorly maintained cooling towers. The side chains of the cell wall carry the bases responsible for the somatic antigen specificity of these organisms. The chemical composition of these side chains both with respect to components and arrangement of the different sugars de ...

Legionella Jordanis
''Legionella jordanis'' is a Gram-negative bacterium from the genus ''Legionella'' which was isolated from the Clear Creek (Salt Creek)#Water quality issues, Jordan River in Bloomington, Indiana, Bloomington, Indiana and from the sewage in DeKalb County, Georgia. ''L. jordanis'' is a rare human pathogen and can cause respiratory tract infections. History ''Legionella jordanis'' strain BL-540 was first isolated from water samples taken at the Jordan River in Bloomington, Indiana by Cherry et al. in 1978. Another strain characterized as ABB-9 was discovered in 1980 from sewage collected in DeKalb County, Georgia. The species, specific epithet ''jordanis'' was derived from the name of the river in which was discovered. The two strains were both Gram staining, Gram-stained. The Sudan black B fat stain for lipids and the Schaeffer–Fulton stain, Wirtz-Conklin method were used to demonstrate Bacterial spore, spore formation. Acid-fast staining was used, as well. The cultures were strea ...

Legionella Clemsonensis
''Legionella clemsonensis'' was isolated in 2006, but was described in 2016 by Clemson University researchers. It is a Gram-negative bacterium. Taxonomic and phylogenetic description “''Legionella''” is named after the American Legion convention where the first outbreak occurred, killing 34 people and sickening 221 individuals in 1976. It occurred in Philadelphia during the convention for the association of the U.S. veterans. The specific name ''clemsonensis''” derives from Clemson University, where undergraduates DNA-sequenced this new strain. ''Legionella'' has a correlation with another genus called '' Coxiella''. Both cause lung infection that can eventually lead to pneumonia due to the intracellular bacteria in aerosols. Discovery Based on physical characteristics, phylogenetic analysis, and membrane fatty-acid composition, the organism was found to represent a unique lineage within the ''Legionella'' bacteria. The specific strain for ''Legionella clemsonensis'' ...

Legionella Cherrii
''Legionella cherrii'' is an aerobic, flagellated, Gram-negative bacterium from the genus ''Legionella''. It was isolated from a heated water sample in Minnesota. ''L. cherrii'' is similar to another ''Legionella'' species, '' L. pneumophila'', and is believed to cause major respiratory problems. History Discovery The bacterium was first discovered in 1982 by R. L. Tyndall and C. B. Duncan, who were a part of D.J. Brenner's team that discovered ten new species of ''Legionella''. The isolation process initiated after collecting water samples and transferring them into guinea pig tissues before plating them onto buffered charcoal yeast extract agar. Afterwards, ''L. cherrii'' strains were cultured around 36 °C in an environment containing 2.5% carbon dioxide. Etymology The genus ''Legionella'' is named after the 1976 pneumonia (''Legionella pneumophila'') outbreak at the American Legion convention at the Bellevue-Stratford Hotel in Philadelphia. The genus was previously unkn ...

Legionella Anisa
''Legionella anisa'' is a Gram-negative bacterium, one of more than 40 species in the family Legionellaceae. After ''Legionella pneumophila'', this species has been isolated most frequently from water samples. This species is also one of the several pathogenic forms of ''Legionella'' having been associated with rare clinical cases of illness including Pontiac fever and Legionnaires' disease. History This species was first isolated from water during a nosocomial outbreak in the United States between March 1980 and June 1981. The type strain of ''L. anisa'' is WA-316-C3 (ATCC 35292). The first reported clinical detection was in 1986, with a female patient in Victoria, Australia, who presented with pneumonia. Similar to other ''Legionella'' species, person-to-person transmission has not been documented. Structure Like other ''Legionella'' species, ''L. anisa'' is a thin, aerobic, pleomorphic, flagellated, non-spore-forming, Gram-negative bacterium. A distinguishing characteristic ...
