Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the history of motorcycling while honoring the heritage of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in Sturgis, South Dakota. The museum's doors officially opened in June 2001. The museum's first location was an old church renovated with extensive help from community groups including the museum's Board of Directors, the Jackpine Gypsies Motorcycle Club, local students and other volunteers from the Sturgis community. Vintage and rare motorcycles were loaned to the museum for the opening by national and local collectors. Ray Price (June 25, 1937 – December 16, 2015) was an American motorcycle drag racer and is credited as the "Father of the Funnybike". He was also a renowned designer, engineer and the first drag racer to be sponsored by Harley-Davidson. He also developed the first wheelie bar, and the two-speed automatic racing transmission for drag racing motorcycles. This was the first transmission that enabled the first motorcycle to ever achieve and has now become standard in the sport. Price also created the Pro Fuel drag racing class. Price is an inducted member of five halls of fame including the American Motorcycle Association Hall of Fame, Sturgis Motorcycle Hall of Fame, the North Carolina Sport Hall of Fame, and the North Carolina Drag Racing Hall of Fame. Motorcycle drag racing (also known as "sprints") involves two participants lining up at a dragstrip with a signaled starting line. Upon the starting signal, the riders accelerate down a or long, two lane, straight paved track where their elapsed time and terminal speed are recorded.
