''Legend of the Five Rings'' (''L5R'') is an out-of-print collectible card game created by a joint venture featuring Alderac Entertainment Group and ISOMEDIA in 1995 and published until 2015, when it was announced that the game would be discontinued for a rules-incompatible successor that will be part of Fantasy Flight Games' Living Card Game line. ''L5R'' takes place in the fictional empire of Rokugan from the ''Legend of the Five Rings'' setting, where several clans and factions vie for domination over the empire. The card game shares some similarities with ''Magic: The Gathering'' but has its own game mechanics and flavor, providing "passive" win conditions like the Enlightenment Victory, as well as a version of ''Magics goal of destroying the opponent. John Zinser (game Designer)
John Zinser is an American game designer who has worked primarily on collectible card games and role-playing games. Career In 1992, Jolly Blackburn added John Zinser and David Seay as partners in Alderac Entertainment Group. In 1994, Zinser was working on an original CCG, ''Legend of the Five Rings'', which began as an idea from a conversation between Zinser and Seay discussing the 1980 RPG ''Bushido''. Blackburn left Alderac in 1995 because he felt that Zinser and Seay were looking for success in the CCG industry while he wanted to keep the company fun and small and focus on ''Knights of the Dinner Table''. ''Legend of the Burning Sands'' (''LBS'') is an out-of-print collectible card game (CCG) published by Five Rings Publishing Group (FRPG, then a subsidiary of Wizards of the Coast) in July 1998 in games, 1998. It was a spin-off from the earlier CCG ''Legend of the Five Rings (collectible card game), Legend of the Five Rings''. ''Legend of the Burning Sands'' was set in the same fictional world as ''Legend of the Five Rings'', but with an Arabian setting rather than an East Asian one, with a few characters appearing in both games. Both games had similar mechanics and emphasized a continuing storyline. Wolfgang Baur (born 1968) is an American game designer, best known for his work with '' Dragon'' magazine. He designs role-playing games and is known for his work at Wizards of the Coast. Baur is also the founder of Open Design LLC, later known as Kobold Press.
