Miguel López De Legazpi
Miguel López de Legazpi (12 June 1502 – 20 August 1572), also known as '' El Adelantado'' and ''El Viejo'' (The Elder), was a Spaniard who, from the age of 26, lived and built a career in Mexico (then the Viceroyalty of New Spain) and, in his 60s, financed and led a colonizing expedition from Mexico to the Philippine islands. He was joined by his Mexican grandsons, Juan de Salcedo and his brother Felipe, on the expedition. Legazpi established the first Spanish settlement in the East Indies when his expedition crossed the Pacific Ocean from the New Spain, arriving in Cebu in the modern Philippine Islands in 1565. He was the first Governor-General of the Spanish East Indies, which was administered from Mexico City for the Spanish crown. It also encompassed other Pacific islands, namely Guam, the Marianas Islands, Palau, and the Carolinas. Legazpi is a city in the Gipuzkoa province of the Autonomous Community of the Basque Country, northern Spain. Legazpi is a town of about 9,000 inhabitants located on top of the Urola valley, in Gipuzkoa. Surrounded by mountains, and at the foot of the Aizkorri mountain range, its predominant economic activity is industrial (manufacturing, metal processing, plastics). The Roman Catholic Diocese of Legazpi (Latin: ''Dioecesis Legazpiensis'') is a diocese of the Latin Rite of the Roman Catholic Church. It constitutes the entire province of Albay in the Philippines. The diocese was erected in 1951, carved from territory of the Archdiocese of Cáceres, to which it is a suffragan. In 1974, the diocese was partitioned to form the Diocese of Virac. Joel "Bong" Baylon is the current bishop of Legazpi, after serving as Bishop of Masbate. Jose Borromeo Legaspi Memorial National High School (JBLMNHS) is a public secondary school located in Barangay Aranas, Balete, Aklan, Philippines. It is recognized by the Department of Education. History Recognizing the need for a secondary school in the Barangay, Jean Oquendo Rodriguez who was then the Mayor of Balete, initiated a plan to create a school with Elna Perez Beltran and Abundio R. Guadalupe who worked on the papers for the approval of the proposal. Although there was already a private secondary school in the town, they considered the young people of Aranas who had to endure a long walk across town every morning and afternoon to attend school.
