The Legalise Cannabis Western Australia Party (LCWA party) is a political party registered in Western Australia. The party advocates for law reform in relation to cannabis. History The LCWA party is the sister party of the LCQ party and affiliate of the HEMP Party and Medical Cannabis Users Association of Australia (MCUA). Following in the success of its sister party LCQ in the 2020 Queensland state election the Party was registered by the Western Australian Electoral Commission on 29 January 2021 to contest the 2021 Western Australian state election, at which two of its candidates – Brian Walker in East Metropolitan Region and Sophia Moermond in South-West Region – were elected to the Western Australian Legislative Council. Sophia Moermond
Sophia Moermond (born 14 September 1968) is an Australian politician. She was elected to the Western Australian Legislative Council at the 2021 state election, representing Legalise Cannabis WA. Early life Moermond was born in Rotterdam on 14 September 1968. She moved to South Africa with her parents in 1972, returning to the Netherlands four years later. The family immigrated to Australia in 1983, settling in Heathridge, Western Australia. She attended Ocean Reef Senior High School, then returned to the Netherlands to study nursing. She graduated in 1991 and returned to Australia. Career Prior to entering politics, Moermond was a practising naturopath and Chinese medicine practitioner, based in Perth. She also worked as an educator in the corporate sector. Legalise Cannabis Queensland (registered with the Electoral Commission Queensland as Legalise Cannabis Qld (Party)) is a political party based in Queensland, Australia. LCQ has a number of policies that centre around the personal, medical and industrial uses of cannabis. Brian Follett Walker (born 5 September 1954) is an Australian politician. Walker was a medical practitioner before entering politics. At the 2021 Western Australian state election, Walker was elected to the Western Australian Legislative Council as a Legalise Cannabis WA member for the East Metropolitan Region. His term commenced on 24 May 2021. Walker was born in Malaysia to Scottish parents, and was educated at Scotch College, Perth, prior to studying medicine at the University of Dundee.
