Leela Vernon
Leela Vernon MBE (21 October 1950 – 19 February 2017) was a Belizean cultural icon noted for her contributions to preserving Creole culture in the country. She was awarded the title "Queen of Brukdown", received the Order of the British Empire for promoting Creole culture and music, and was named the Brukdown Artist of the Year in 2004. She was honored as National Hero in 2016 by the National Institute of Culture and History. Early life Lila Genus Martinez was born on 21 October 1950 near Punta Gorda in a disputed border region, now known as the "adjacency zone", between British Honduras and Guatemala. Neither country wanted to issue a birth certificate, but eventually, her parents Gladys Matilda Genus and Alfredo Martinez Jiménez were able to secure a birth certificate and passport from Guatemala. Belize City
Belize City is the largest city in Belize and was once the capital of the former British Honduras. According to the 2010 census, Belize City has a population of 57,169 people in 16,162 households. It is at the mouth of the Haulover Creek, which is a distributary of the Belize River. The Belize River empties into the Caribbean Sea from Belize City on the Philip Goldson Highway on the coast of the Caribbean. The city is the country's principal port and its financial and industrial hub. Cruise ships drop anchor outside the port and are tendered by local citizens. ''Amandala'' is a Belizean tabloid newspaper. Published twice weekly, it is Belize's largest newspaper. ''Amandala'' was established in 1969 as the print organ of the now-defunct United Black Association for Development (UBAD), but has been politically independent since the mid-1970s. Its offices are located at 3304 Partridge Street in Belize City. As of 2017, it has published over 3000 issues. The name The name "Amandala" is adapted from the Xhosa language, Xhosa/Zulu language, Zulu word "Amandla (power), amandla", which means "power". Editors felt that Belizeans might mispronounce the word, so they added an extra "a" after the "d". Belizean Creole
Belizean Creole (Belizean Creole: ''Belize Kriol'', ''Kriol'') is an English-based creole language spoken by the Belizean Creole people. It is closely related to Miskito Coastal Creole, San Andrés-Providencia Creole, and Jamaican Patois ( Limonese and Bocas del Toro dialects). Belizean Creole is a contact language that developed and grew between 1650 and 1930, as a result of the slave trade. Belizean Creole, like many Creole languages, first started as a pidgin. It was a way for people of other backgrounds and languages, in this case slaves and English colonisers within the logging industry, to communicate with each other. Over generations the language developed into a creole, being a language used as some people’s mother tongue language. Belizean Creoles are people of Afro-European origin.
