The suburb name is derived from the point "Lee Point" which appears on Goyder's 1869 Plan of Port Darwin and probably dates back to Stokes' examination of the harbour in 1839. A short distance from the beach's carpark, one can find a well-preserved bunker used during World War II along the cycle path, which runs from Lee Point to Brinkin. Casuarina is an electoral division of the Legislative Assembly in Australia's Northern Territory. It was first created in 1974 and was named after the adjacent suburb of Casuarina. Casuarina is an entirely urban electorate, covering only 12 km2 and taking in the suburbs of Brinkin, Nakara, Tiwi and part of Alawa, as well as the Charles Darwin University. There were 5,647 people enrolled in the electorate as of August 2020. For the first three decades of its existence, Casuarina, like most seats in the Darwin area, was a stronghold for the Country Liberal Party. Clare Martin did nearly manage to take the seat for the Labor Party upon the retirement of long-serving CLP member Nick Dondas in 1994, but lost out to the CLP's Peter Adamson, who held the seat for the next seven years. Beagle Gulf is a gulf in the Northern Territory of Australia which opens on its west side to the Timor Sea. Leanyer is a northern suburb of Darwin, in the Northern Territory of Australia. History The name Leanyer was in general use for the area at the time of development and first appeared on 1869 survey plans. Leanyer is thought to be derived from an Aboriginal word. During World War II Leanyer was established as a military area, there was an Army post and a military equipment storage facility, gun turrets were also set up along the coast of Lee Point. It was disbanded soon after the end of World War II and residential development of Leanyer started during the 1970s. The suburb is bounded by Trower Road, Henbury Avenue and a coastal strip, separating Casuarina Beach and Lee Point Beach. It is in the Local Government Area of City of Darwin.
