Lee Jeonghee
Lee Jeonghee (; born 23 February 1963) is a South Korean abacus master. She is the only known soroban abacus master to have reached the eleventh dan. She is also known as Abacus Master (주산왕) in South Korea. Biography Lee began training with the soroban abacus in fifth grade. In her first year of high school, she obtained the 11th dan. In 2007, Lee opened up an abacus training academy in Korea, where she has taught thousands of students, some of whom travel to the country solely to participate. In 2001, Lee represented South Korea in the 20th International Abacus Competition and finished in first place in the singles category. In 2008, Lee appeared on the South Korean television program Star King with a group of children ages seven to nine, whom she had taught for a 100-day period. Soroban
The is an abacus developed in Japan. It is derived from the History of Science and Technology in China, ancient Chinese suanpan, imported to Japan in the 14th century. Like the suanpan, the soroban is still used today, despite the proliferation of practical and affordable pocket electronic calculators. Construction The soroban is composed of an odd number of columns or rods, each having beads: one separate bead having a value of five, called and four beads each having a value of one, called . Each set of beads of each rod is divided by a bar known as a reckoning bar. The number and size of beads in each rod make a standard-sized 13-rod soroban much less bulky than a standard-sized suanpan of similar expressive power. The ranking system is used by many Japanese, Okinawan, Korean, and other martial art organizations to indicate the level of a person's ability within a given system. Used as a ranking system to quantify skill level in a specific domain, it was originally used at a Go school during the Edo period. It is now also used in most modern Japanese fine and martial arts. Mental Abacus
The abacus system of mental calculation is a system where users mentally visualize an abacus to carry out arithmetical calculations. No physical abacus is used; only the answers are written down. Calculations can be made at great speed in this way. For example, in the Flash Anzan event at the All Japan Soroban Championship, champion Takeo Sasano was able to add fifteen three-digit numbers in just 1.7 seconds. This system is being propagated in China, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, Malaysia, and Japan. The Mental Calculation World Cup (German: Weltmeisterschaften im Kopfrechnen, or World Championship in Mental Calculation) is an international competition for mental calculators, held every two years in Germany. Human calculator is a term to describe a person with a prodigious ability in some area of mental calculation (such as adding, subtracting, multiplying or dividing large numbers). The world's best mental calculators are invited every two years to compete for the Mental Calculation World Cup.
