Lee-on-the-Solent, often referred to as Lee-on-Solent, is a seaside district of the Borough of Gosport in Hampshire, England, about five miles (8 km) west of Portsmouth. The area is located on the coast of the Solent. It is primarily a residential area, with an upsurge of mostly local visitors in summer, but was also the former home to the Royal Naval Air Station HMS ''Daedalus'' (renamed as HMS ''Ariel'' from 1959 to 1965). History The district gained its name in the 19th century, during attempts to develop the area into a seaside resort. Lee is a town in Strafford County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 4,520 at the 2020 census. The town is a rural farm and bedroom community, being close to the University of New Hampshire. History Lee was first settled by Europeans in 1657 as part of the extensive early Dover township. It includes Wheelwright Pond, named for the Reverend John Wheelwright, the founder of Exeter. Wheelwright Pond was the site of a noted early battle during King William's War. Indians, incited by the government of New France, attacked Exeter on July 4, 1690. They were pursued by two infantry companies raised for the purpose, who overtook them at Wheelwright Pond on July 6, 1690. Lee is a census-designated place (CDP) located in the town of Lee in Berkshire County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 2,051 at the 2010 census, out of 5,943 in the entire town of Lee. Geography The Lee CDP is located in the center of the town of Lee at (42.306929, -73.247351). U.S. Route 20 passes through the CDP as Main Street and Housatonic Street, leading north to Lenox and Pittsfield and south to Interstate 90 (the Massachusetts Turnpike), which forms the southern edge of the CDP and accesses it via Turnpike Exit 2. Lee is an unincorporated community in Monon Township, White County, in the U.S. state of Indiana. History The site of what is now Lee is first recorded as a station stop on the Indianapolis, Delphi and Chicago Railroad, a company which by late 1879 had completed its initial 40-mile stretch of railroad connecting Rensselaer and Delphi. The following year on 25 October a post office was established at the location to serve the rural districts northwest of Monon with Calvin Anderson as its first postmaster. Around 1884 the railroad became known as the Monon Route. Lee was established in 1883 and named for John Lee, the president of the ID&C Railroad, who opened a grain market there. Lee (also, Lees Camp) is a former settlement in Inyo County, California. It was located near the Nevada state line, east of Beatty Junction. A post office operated at Lee from 1907 to 1912.
