Leaving for Maui was a hit in Canada and Hawaii for Edmonton cabaret band Footloose in 1979. Background Footloose were a college band that had been around for around 18 months. This was their first release. Six months after it was released it got to the top ten in Canada. In addition to making the top of the Canadian music charts, it was also one of the most requested songs of the year in Hawaii. The light disco rock single brought the group had big success. Footloose (band)
Footloose was a Canadian band that had a hit in 1979 with "Leaving For Maui". The membership included Tim Feehan and later, Doug Riley. Background Formed in 1978 in Edmonton, Alberta, the group was made up of Tim Feehan on vocals, Dwayne Feland on drums, George Goodall on bass, Terry Medd on guitar and Curt Smith on keys. They all had a leaning towards the funky rhythm and blues sound. Dwayne Feland had played in the HUB Cigar band prior to his being with Footloose, and Tim Feehan and George Goodall had been in the funk-oriented dance band, Buckeye. Terry Medd had been playing in gigs with Curt Smith and he had also been in the band Missouri. The members of the band never had the intention of being a serious band. They were just trying to make some money. But their song "Leaving For Maui" got into the Canadian Top 10. It took them to Hawaii where they also played. Tim Feehan
Tim Feehan (born April 27, 1957 in Edmonton, Alberta) is a Canadian singer-songwriter, producer, mix master and Los Angeles area studio owner. Career Tim Feehan graduated from the University of Alberta in 1980 and began his recording/songwriting career quite accidentally when his college band " Footloose" was asked by a local studio owner to record a song he'd written. That song, "Leaving for Maui", was a Top Ten hit in Hawaii. In 1986, Feehan entered a songwriting contest sponsored by producer David Foster (Celine Dion, Whitney Houston) taking first place and signed with Scotti Bros/CBS in Los Angeles where he relocated later that year. The self-titled debut album ''Tim Feehan'' was released in 1987 and gained five A.R.I.A. (Alberta Recording Industry Association) awards including "Best Pop Performance" and "Producer of the Year". Rosalie Trombley (September 18, 1939 – November 23, 2021) was a Canadian music director of AM Top 40 radio station CKLW, also known as "The Big 8". She was known for her ability to select songs that would later become big hits.
