Learning Disability Coalition
The Learning Disability Coalition (LDC) is a group of fourteen organisations which campaigns to secure better funding for social care for people with learning disabilities in England. The Coalition was formed in May 2007. It believes that better funding from the UK Government is required to help people with learning disabilities to secure a full range of rights and opportunities. The LDC aims to provide a unified voice for people with learning disabilities to government and other key decision makers; to raise awareness of financial pressures on services, and achieve an evidence-based assessment of the long-term resource requirements for people with learning disabilities. The organization shut down independent operations to become a "special interest group" within the Voluntary Organisations Disability Group in 2012. Learning Disabilities
Learning disability, learning disorder, or learning difficulty (British English) is a condition in the brain that causes difficulties comprehending or processing information and can be caused by several different factors. Given the "difficulty learning in a typical manner", this does not exclude the ability to learn in a different manner. Therefore, some people can be more accurately described as having a "learning difference", thus avoiding any misconception of being disabled with a lack of ability to learn and possible negative stereotyping. In the United Kingdom, the term "learning disability" generally refers to an intellectual disability, while difficulties such as dyslexia and dyspraxia are usually referred to as "learning difficulties". Voluntary Organisations Disability Group
The Voluntary Organisations Disability Group represents organisations within the voluntary sector who work alongside disabled people. It is a charity registered in London founded in 2008. Rhidian Hughes is the chief executive. It has repeatedly criticised the government's handling of the sleep-in carers issue and has had correspondence from Kelly Tolhurst, the minister, on behalf of non-profit employers in the social care sector. It opposed the Mental Capacity (Amendment) Act 2019. The organisation has repeatedly called for an end to austerity and lobbied government for sustainable reform of the social care system. Mencap
The Royal Mencap Society is a charity based in the United Kingdom that works with people with a learning disability. Its Charity Number is 222377. History Established by Judy Fryd in 1946 as The National Association of Parents of Backwards Children, the organisation changed its name to The National Society for Mentally Handicapped Children in 1955, becoming The Royal Society for Mentally Handicapped Children and Adults following patronage from Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother and Elizabeth II in 1981. Fryd had written to ''Nursery World'' magazine inviting other parents to contact her. Many wrote back expressing their anger and sorrow at the lack of services for their children. Turning Point (charity)
Turning Point is a health and social care organisation that works across mental health, learning disability, substance misuse, primary care, the criminal justice system and employment. In 2017, Turning Point won the contract to deliver sexual health services in 3 London boroughs and Autism Plus joined the Turning Point group. Many of Turning Point services are regulated by the Care Quality Commission. Organisation Turning Point is a social enterprise and registered charity based in the United Kingdom that runs projects in more than 240 locations across England and Wales. United Response
United Response is a charity operating in England and Wales, providing a range of support and services for around 2,000 people with learning disabilities, mental health needs or physical disabilities. History United Response was founded in 1973 by Su Sayer, CBE. She opened the first service in Tillington, West Sussex. By 1979, it was the region's largest provider of support for people with learning disabilities. In 1983, United Response expanded to the north of England, setting up its first service in Chesterfield. In 1990, the charity started working with people with mental health needs. Seven years later, it began implementing person-centered active support under the guidance of the late Professor Jim Mansell, CBE, who joined the Board of Trustees in 1995. ARC Association For Real Change
ARC Association for Real Change is a UK membership organisation, which supports providers of services to people with a learning disability. History Association for Reach Change (known as ARC) was founded in 1976 as the Association of Residential Communities for the Retarded. For a brief period of time it looked as if 'mental retardation' would come over from the United States as the new terminology to replace 'mental handicap' which was unpopular. However, that did not happen and the term 'learning disability' was adopted by the Department of Health (UK), Department of Health (after much debate and some disagreement which continues to today because the term 'learning disability' has a different meaning in the education world). The National Autistic Society is the leading charity for autistic people and their families in the UK. Comprehensive Spending Review
A spending review, or occasionally a comprehensive spending review, is a governmental process in the United Kingdom carried out by HM Treasury to set firm expenditure limits and, through public service agreements, define the key improvements that the public can expect from these resources. Spending reviews typically focus upon one or several aspects of public spending while comprehensive spending reviews focus upon each government department's spending requirements from a zero base (i.e. without reference to past plans or, initially, current expenditure). Disability is the experience of any condition that makes it more difficult for a person to do certain activities or have equitable access within a given society. Disabilities may be cognitive, developmental, intellectual, mental, physical, sensory, or a combination of multiple factors. Disabilities can be present from birth or can be acquired during a person's lifetime. Historically, disabilities have only been recognized based on a narrow set of criteria—however, disabilities are not binary and can be present in unique characteristics depending on the individual.
