Leah Hextall
Leah Hextall (born ) is a Canadian sports journalist and ice hockey play-by-play broadcaster. In March 2020, she became the first woman to call play-by-play for a nationally televised NHL game as part of Sportsnet’s first all-female broadcast team. Hextall had previously made history as the first woman to call an NCAA Men's Ice Hockey Championship game, for ESPN at the 2019 tournament. Broadcast career Hextall graduated from the Columbia Academy of Radio, Television and Recording Arts in Vancouver with a diploma in radio and television broadcasting in 2003. She worked for CTV Winnipeg from 2005 to 2012, and for the New England Sports Network (NESN) as host of ''NESN Sports Today'' from 2012 to 2014. Brandon () is the second-largest city in the province of Manitoba, Canada. The Winnipeg Jets are a professional ice hockey team based in Winnipeg. CJOB (680 kHz) is a commercial AM radio station in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. It is owned and operated by Corus Radio and airs a news/talk format with news and sports programs. CJOB and its sister stations, CFPG-FM, CJKR-FM, and CKND-DT, have studios and offices at 201 Portage in Winnipeg. The transmitter tower array is located off Floodway Road near Saint Adolphe. CJOB operates at 50,000 watts (the highest power permitted for Canadian AM stations), but because 680 kHz is a clear channel frequency, CJOB must use a directional antenna at all times to avoid interfering with other stations. AM broadcasting is radio broadcasting using amplitude modulation (AM) transmissions. It was the first method developed for making audio radio transmissions, and is still used worldwide, primarily for medium wave (also known as "AM band") transmissions, but also on the longwave and shortwave radio bands. ''The Brandon Sun'' is a Monday through Saturday newspaper printed in Brandon, Manitoba. It is the primary newspaper of record for western Manitoba and includes substantial political, crime, business and sports news. ''The Brandon Sun'' also publishes a weekly Westman This Week edition featuring local columns and events listings that is distributed free to the entire city. The Western Hockey League (WHL) is a major junior ice hockey league based in Western Canada and the Northwestern United States. The Brandon Wheat Kings are a Canadian junior ice hockey team based in Brandon, Manitoba. They are members of the Western Hockey League (WHL) since joining the league in the 1967–68 season. Previously, they played in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League (MJHL), with the exception of two seasons in the mid-1960s when they played in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL). The team was a successor to the Brandon Wheat City senior team that participated in the 1904 Stanley Cup Challenge, losing to the Ottawa Senators. Canadian Women's Hockey League
The Canadian Women's Hockey League (CWHL; french: Ligue canadienne de hockey féminin ‒ LCHF) was a women's ice hockey league. Established in 2007 as a Canadian women's senior league in the Greater Toronto Area, Montreal, and Ottawa, the league eventually expanded into Alberta, as well as teams in China and the United States throughout its tenure. The league discontinued operations May 1, 2019, after 12 seasons of operations.
