The Cymru Premier, known as the JD Cymru Premier for sponsorship reasons, is the national football league of Wales. It has both professional and semi-professional status clubs and is at the top of the Welsh football league system. Prior to 2002, the league was known as the League of Wales (LoW), but changed its name as part of a sponsorship deal to the Welsh Premier League. The league was rebranded as the Cymru Premier for the 2019–20 season. Formation Original League The league was formed in October 1991 by Alun Evans, Secretary General of the Football Association of Wales (FAW), as he believed that the Welsh international football team was under threat from FIFA. Alun E. Evans (11 June 1942 – 12 November 2011) was general secretary of the Football Association of Wales between 1982 and 1995 and club Secretary of Welsh League side, UWIC FC. Profile Evans obtained two bachelor's degrees in economics and geography from the University of London followed by his teaching qualification at Pembroke College, Oxford. He taught economics and geography in independent schools in London and Lancashire for seven years before entering sports administration as Secretary of the Universities Athletic Union, where he organised the National Universities Championships in 27 sports. Penybont (also sometimes spelled Pen-y-Bont) is a small village in Radnorshire, Powys, Wales. The population of the community at the 2011 census was 428. The community includes the settlement of Llandegley. Penybont colliery The Penybont colliery was opened by the Jaynes Tillery Colliery in 1851.
