Le Baruffe Chiozzotte
''Le baruffe chiozzotte'' (''Brawling in Chioggia'') is a play by the Italian playwright Carlo Goldoni, first performed at the Teatro San Luca in Venice in January 1762. It deals with the comic struggles between two groups of fishermen in the lagoon-mouth village of Chioggia brought on by the love affairs of the younger generation. Written in Venetian, the comedy is intensified by the presence of a hapless young Venetian official, who is helpless to enforce order on the sly inhabitants he is supposed to keep under control. In modern times, the play was revived at the Piccolo Teatro di Milano in 1962, in a production by Giorgio Strehler emphasizing the humanity and realism of Goldoni's script over the conventionally farcical elements. In 1966 the production was filmed for Italian television. A concert overture based on the play was composed by Leone Sinigaglia in 1907; it was a favorite of Arturo Toscanini. Chioggia (; vec, Cióxa , locally ; la, Clodia) is a coastal town and ''comune'' of the Metropolitan City of Venice in the Veneto region of northern Italy. Geography The town is situated on a small island at the southern entrance to the Lagoon of Venice about south of Venice ( by road); causeways connect it to the mainland and to its ''frazione'', nowadays a quarter, of Sottomarina. The population of the ''comune'' is around 50,000, with the town proper accounting for about half of that and Sottomarina for most of the rest. The Piccolo Teatro di Milano (translation: "Little Theatre of the City of Milan") is a theatre in Milan, Italy. Giorgio Strehler
Giorgio Strehler (; ; 14 August 1921 – 25 December 1997) was an actor, Italian opera and theatre director. Biography Strehler was born in Barcola, Trieste; His father, Bruno Strehler, was a native of Trieste with family roots in Vienna and died when Giorgio was only three. His maternal grandfather, Olimpio Lovrich, subsequently became his father figure. Olimpio was one of the finest horn players of his day and the impresario of the Teatro Comunale Giuseppe Verdi, Trieste's Opera House. ''Le baruffe chiozzotte'', Op. 32, is a concert overture by Leone Sinigaglia written in 1907. It was introduced in Milan under Arturo Toscanini's baton in the spring of that year. Based on the comedy ''Le baruffe chiozzotte'' by Carlo Goldoni, it is a spirited work that opens with brilliant subject for full orchestra. A subsidiary theme, more serene in nature, provides contrast. The second main subject of the work is a folk song, first heard in the oboe; it is soon taken up by the first violins. With the quickening of tempo the music becomes more vivacious, with a chattering figure in the woodwinds and violins. Leone Sinigaglia (14 August 1868 – 16 May 1944) was an Italian composer and mountaineer. Biography Born in Turin into an upper-middle-class Jewish family, Sinigaglia studied music at the conservatory of music in Turin with Giovanni Bolzoni. Sinigaglia knew the leading figures of thought, arts and science that lived in the city at the time, such as Galileo Ferraris, Cesare Lombroso, and Leonardo Bistolfi. A lover of literature and mountaineering from an early age, the young Sinigaglia spent many holidays in or near Cavoretto, just outside the city, a place that would provide him with much inspiration. Arturo Toscanini (; ; March 25, 1867January 16, 1957) was an Italian conductor. He was one of the most acclaimed and influential musicians of the late 19th and early 20th century, renowned for his intensity, his perfectionism, his ear for orchestral detail and sonority, and his eidetic memory. Franco Leoni
Franco Leoni (24 October 1864 – 8 February 1949) was an Italian opera composer. After training in Milan, he made most of his career in England, composing for Royal Opera House, Covent Garden and West End theatre, West End theatres. He is best known for the opera ''L'Oracolo'', written for Covent Garden but taken up successfully by the Metropolitan Opera in New York.
