Le Race
Le Race is a road bicycle racing event held annually in Canterbury, New Zealand since 1999. The race starts in Christchurch and finishes in Akaroa, and covers a distance of . History Le Race was first held in 1999. In the 2001 event, competitor Vanessa Caldwell died on the Summit Road in the Port Hills when she collided head-on with a car. Race organiser Astrid Anderson was charged with criminal nuisance and convicted in 2003, with a NZ$10,000 fine imposed. The conviction had a major impact on events held on New Zealand roads, with many events cancelled or postponed. The Court of Appeal overturned the conviction in September 2004, as the judge was found to have misdirected the jury. No new trial was ordered, but her conviction was quashed. Anderson's legal costs were NZ$60,000. In 2001, Le Race was one of two events in New Zealand that had a traffic management plan, but this became compulsory following the 2001 fatality. Michael Vink (born 22 November 1991) is a New Zealand professional road cyclist, who currently rides for UCI WorldTeam . He was signed by on the strength of his results in the virtual cycling platform ‘MyWhoosh’. Vink has won the Tour of Southland three times (2018, 2019, 2021), a feat only achieved by four other riders. Keagan Girdlestone
Keagan Girdlestone (born 30 April 1997) is a South African-New Zealand cyclist, who last rode for New Zealand amateur squad Team Frezzor Racing. At the 2016 Coppa della Pace, Girdlestone crashed twice on a descent near Rimini, causing serious injuries. He was then transported to a hospital in critical condition. Due to this accident, the race was cancelled. Despite predictions by doctors that he would never race again, he competed in the 2017 Le Race (the event that he won in 2014) where he finished just inside the top 50. Brian Fowler (cyclist)
Brian Andrew Fowler (born 13 September 1962) is a retired cyclist who represented New Zealand at four consecutive Summer Olympics, starting in 1984. In 1983, he rode Paris–Nice finishing 43rd. He won six medals (one gold, four silvers, one bronze) at four consecutive Commonwealth Games. Fowler's finest hour came when he won the gold medal in the men's team time trial at the 1990 Commonwealth Games. Fowler won the Tour of Southland a record eight times. He also holds the record for number of wins in the Tour of Wellington, with four consecutive successes. Benjamin Clifford Bright, also known as Ben Bright, was born on 12 July 1974 in Waiuku, New Zealand. He is the head coach for GB Triathlon, an olympic coach and a former athlete. Athletic career Bright won Le Race, a road bicycle race in Canterbury, New Zealand, in early 2000. He competed at the first Olympic triathlon at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia. He ended up finishing in thirty-eighth place with a total time of 1:52:17.26. Coaching Later on, Bright became a coach of Mantas, a local swim club in Hong Kong.
