Le Juif Errant (opera)
''Le Juif errant'' (''The Wandering Jew'') is a grand opera by Fromental Halévy, with a libretto by Eugène Scribe and Jules-Henri Vernoy de Saint-Georges. The opera is based extremely loosely on themes of the novel ''Le Juif errant'', by Eugène Sue. Whilst the novel is set in 19th century Paris and the Wandering Jew is incidental to the main story-line, the opera begins in Amsterdam in 1190 and the Jew Ahasuerus (spelled Ashvérus in the opera) is a leading character. Performance history ''Le Juif errant'' was premiered at the Salle Le Peletier of the Paris Opera on 23 April 1852, and had 48 further performances over two seasons. The music was sufficiently popular to generate a ''Wandering Jew Mazurka'', a ''Wandering Jew Waltz'', a ''Wandering Jew Polka'' and in France just in the several months after the opera was premiered an even more considerable quantity of piano works, including several called "Grande fantaisie dramatique" and similar titles, based on the opera. Grand opera is a genre of 19th-century opera generally in four or five acts, characterized by large-scale casts and orchestras, and (in their original productions) lavish and spectacular design and stage effects, normally with plots based on or around dramatic historic events. Molinier (baritone)
Molinier was the stage name of François Gély (1807–1859), a French operatic baritone who mostly performed minor roles at the Paris Opéra.Tamvaco 2000, vol. 2, p. 740. He made his professional debut without much success on 15 February 1826 with the Opéra-Comique at the Salle Feydeau as Alibour in Méhul's '' Euphrosine et Coradin''. He first appeared at the Paris Opéra on 2 October 1837 as an emergency replacement in a leading bass role, Pietro in Daniel Auber's ''La muette de Portici''. He sang with great emotion, but was thought to have overextended his resources. However, having rescued the performance (and the receipts), he was rewarded by engagement as a company regular, and continued to sing there until 1854. Emmy La Grua
Emmy La Grua (also Emma, Emmi or Emilia) (born 15 May 1831 in Palermo; died after 1869) was a 19th-century Italian opera singer (soprano) who performed successfully internationally. Biography Emmy La Grua was the daughter of the royal Saxon chamber musician Friederike Funk and the Italian tenorist Luigi La Grua. In 1837, she moved with her mother to Dresden. She received singing lessons from her mother as well as from Pauline Viardot-García and Caroline Ungher-Sabatier in Paris. In December 1850, Emmy La Grua made her debut in Dresden as Alice in "Robert the Devil" by Giacomo Meyerbeer. Louis-Henri Obin, born in Ascq, near Lille on 4 August 1820, died in Paris on 9 November 1895, was a French operatic bass. He created some of the most notable roles in French grand opera at the Paris Opera, including the part of King Philip II in Verdi's ''Don Carlos''.
