Lazarus Building
The Lazarus Building is a commercial building in Downtown Columbus, Ohio. It was the flagship store of the F&R Lazarus & Company, a department store founded nearby in 1851. The building, completed in 1909, housed the Lazarus department store until 2004, one year before its brand was retired. The building currently houses numerous state and county offices, the Ohio State University Urban Arts Space, and restaurants and a bank branch in its storefronts on High Street. Attributes The present-day building has had many expansions and renovations, and today occupies much of a city block. It has five stories facing High Street, increasing to seven stories on Front Street. The West Town Street facade of the building is largely as originally built. High Street (Columbus, Ohio)
High Street is a major thoroughfare in Central Ohio, predominantly in Franklin County and Columbus. It stretches from the northern border of Columbus in Delaware County south to the southern boundary of Franklin County just past Columbus's municipal boundaries. The street is considered one of Columbus's two main roads, along with Broad Street. Route description High Street extends north and south far into Ohio, though it is named High Street starting at the northern end of Columbus (in Delaware County). North of this it is U.S. Route 23. AIA Columbus is a chapter of the American Institute of Architects. Founded in 1913, it is one of the largest urban components of the American Institute of Architects in the Midwestern United States, with members throughout Central and Southeastern Ohio. Lazarus House
The Lazarus House is a historic house in Downtown Columbus, Ohio. It was built in 1886 for Frederick Lazarus Sr., president of the F&R Lazarus & Company, and was designed in the French Second Empire style. It has undergone numerous renovations since its construction, including for conversion into office space, into apartments, and back to predominantly single-family occupancy. The house is a contributing property of the East Town Street Historic District, on the National Register of Historic Places and Columbus Register of Historic Properties. Attributes The Lazarus House serves as an example for townhouses in the East Town Street Historic District, on the National Register of Historic Places. Lazarus Annex
The Columbus Auditorium was the name of two mixed-use venues in Columbus, Ohio. The first was extant from 1897 to 1910; the second stood from 1927 to 1992. For the last 50 years of its existence, the auditorium building was known as the Lazarus Annex, an expansion of the flagship Lazarus department store. Goodale Street Auditorium The Goodale Street Auditorium (also known as the Columbus Auditorium) opened on June 24, 1897. Architects Yost & Packard designed the auditorium; in doing so they remodeled an older structure, the Park Roller Skating Rink, which had opened on March 17, 1885. The building sat at the northeast corner of Park and West Goodale Streets. It was a wooden building with ornate towers on its four corners. 171-191 South High Street is a pair of historic buildings in Downtown Columbus, Ohio. The commercial structures have seen a wide variety of retail and service uses through the 20th century, including shoe stores, groceries, opticians, hatters, jewelers, a liquor store, and a car dealership. Both exhibit early 20th century façades; 185-191 South High was constructed in 1906, while 171-177 South High was constructed sometime in the 19th century and was remodeled in the second decade of the 20th century. The latter building was once part of the Lazarus Block, holding the original Lazarus (department store), Lazarus department store. 109-111 South High Street is a commercial building on South High Street in Downtown Columbus, Ohio. The building was built in a commercial district that has housed numerous businesses. The current building was constructed c. 1938 for a Woolworth's five-and-dime store, which operated until 1997. After six years of vacancy, the building housed a CVS pharmacy, from 2003 to 2022. Attributes As originally planned, the building was to be a modern, air-conditioned building measuring 62.5 feet wide and 187.5 feet deep. It would have three stories, in addition to a basement and sub-basement, with the upper basement and two floors above set to be retail space.
