Lawtonville Baptist Church
Lawtonville Baptist Church is a historic Baptist church located at Estill, Hampton County, South Carolina. It was built in 1911, and is a brick building with a complex pavilion roof. It features projecting gables, stained glass windows, and a rear entrance that resembles a castle keep in the Late Gothic Revival style. In 1945, the congregation added a Sunday School building to the east of the original church building, and a music building was added in 1962. The church was renovated in 1973. Estill, South Carolina
Estill is a town in Hampton County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 2,040 at the 2010 census. Geography Estill is located north of Savannah, Georgia, northwest of Hilton Head Island and west of Charleston. The major industries are timber and agriculture. History The town of Estill is located in the southern half of Hampton County. The town is named for Colonel John Holbrook Estill. Estill was formed in 1900 when the railroad, later Seaboard Air Line Railroad, needed a rail line between Augusta, Georgia and Savannah, Georgia. Upon construction of the rail line, the new town of Estill was incorporated in 1905. The John Lawton House and Lawtonville Baptist Church are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Julian DeBruyn Kops
Julian de Bruyn Kops (1862–1942) was an architect in Savannah, Georgia. Several of his works are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. He was born in Spartanburg, South Carolina. He studied architecture and civil engineering at Lehigh and the University of Georgia. In 1892 he was the Assistant City Engineer in Savannah. By 1905 he was Savannah's superintendent of architecture. He died in Atlanta. Hampton County is a rural county located in the U.S. state of South Carolina. As of the 2020 census, the population was 18,561. Its county seat is Hampton. It was named for Confederate Civil War general Wade Hampton, who in the late 1870s, with the ending of Reconstruction, was elected as governor of South Carolina. The county includes two small urban clusters: Hampton (2022 Est. Pop. 2,463) and Estill (1,815). Gothic Revival (also referred to as Victorian Gothic, neo-Gothic, or Gothick) is an architectural movement that began in the late 1740s in England. The movement gained momentum and expanded in the first half of the 19th century, as increasingly serious and learned admirers of the neo-Gothic styles sought to revive medieval Gothic architecture, intending to complement or even supersede the neoclassical styles prevalent at the time.
