Lawrence Pech
Lawrence Pech (known as "Larry" to friends and co-workers) is a dancer, choreographer and teacher currently living and working in the San Francisco Bay Area. Early years Pech was born in 1959 in Denver, Colorado. He received his early classical music training in piano and voice. His first choreographic effort was in the fourth grade, to the Beatles’ "Something..." Pech began studying ballet at the age of 14 with the Colorado Concert Ballet. At 16, he won First Prize in the Colorado Council on the Arts Choreography Competition with a piece set to Pink Floyd's "Have a Cigar". The following year (1977), he received full scholarships to the Joffrey Ballet and American Ballet Theatre schools, the School of American Ballet (New York City Ballet), and Mudra (Maurice Béjart's Ballet of the 20th century in Brussels). Jerome Robbins
Jerome Robbins (born Jerome Wilson Rabinowitz; October 11, 1918 – July 29, 1998) was an American dancer, choreographer, film director, theatre director and producer who worked in classical ballet, on stage, film, and television. Helgi Tómasson (dancer)
Helgi Tomasson (born October 8, 1942) is an Icelandic artistic director and principal choreographer for San Francisco Ballet, and a former professional ballet dancer. Since assuming leadership of San Francisco Ballet, he has helped transform the company from a respected regional troupe to one of the world's great classical ballet companies. He is originally from Iceland. Early life Tomasson was born in Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland to Tómas Bergur Snorrason and Dagmar Helgadóttir. He began his ballet training in Reykjavik with a local teacher and went on to join the National Theatre’s affiliated school, which at the time was led by Erik and Lisa Bidsted. Martine Van Hamel
Martine van Hamel (born 16 November 1945) is a Dutch choreographer, director, teacher, retired ballerina and former Principal dancer at the National Ballet of Canada and American Ballet Theatre (ABT). She was a gold medalist at the biennial Varna International Ballet Competition, the most prestigious ballet competition in the world, held in Varna, Bulgaria. She is also a recipient of the Prix de Varna, a recognition rarely awarded, for best artistic interpretation in all categories. She was one of the leading classical ballerinas in America. Van Hamel studied classical ballet in Denmark, the Netherlands, Indonesia, and Venezuela. Gelsey Kirkland
Gelsey Kirkland (born December 29, 1952) is an American ballerina. She received early ballet training at the School of American Ballet. Kirkland joined the New York City Ballet in 1968 at age 15, at the invitation of George Balanchine. She was promoted to soloist in 1969, and principal in 1972. She went on to create leading roles in many of the great twentieth century ballets by Balanchine, Jerome Robbins, and Antony Tudor, including Balanchine's revival of ''The Firebird'', Robbins' ''Goldberg Variations'', and Tudor's ''The Leaves are Fading''. Fernando Bujones
Fernando Bujones (March 9, 1955 – November 10, 2005) was an American dancer. Born in Miami, Florida to Cuban parents, Bujones is regarded as one of the finest male dancers of the 20th century and hailed as one of the greatest American male dancers of his generation. Personal life Bujones was born to Cuban natives Fernando Bujones Sr. and Mary Calleriro, who divorced when Bujones was just five years old. At the age of six, Bujones began to learn ballet in Havana at the school of a famous ballerina, Alicia Alonso, which is where his mother took him before they moved permanently to Miami. His mother, who was a former dancer, enrolled him in these dance classes due to his poor constitution as a child. Cynthia Gregory
Cynthia Kathleen Gregory (born July 8, 1946) is an American former prima ballerina. Career Born in Los Angeles, Gregory took up dancing when she was five, with the encouragement of her parents, who hoped exercise would stem her history of childhood illnesses. A performance by Margot Fonteyn and Rudolph Nureyev had inspired young Cynthia to study ballet. By age six, she was ''en pointe''; and at age seven, she first appeared on the cover of Dance Magazine. She would eventually go on to dance with Nureyev in a production of ''Romeo and Juliet,'' which he had originated with Fonteyn as Juliet. He has called Gregory "America's Prima ballerina assoluta." Mark William Morris (born August 29, 1956) is an American dancer, choreographer and director whose work is acclaimed for its craftsmanship, ingenuity, humor, and at times eclectic musical accompaniments. Natalia Romanovna Makarova (russian: Ната́лия Рома́новна Мака́рова, born 21 November 1940) is a Russian prima ballerina and choreographer. ''The History of Dance'', published in 1981, notes that "her performances set standards of artistry and aristocracy of dance which mark her as the finest ballerina of her generation in the West." Biography Makarova was born in Leningrad in the Russian SFSR of the Soviet Union. Karole Armitage (born March 3, 1954) is an American dancer and choreographer currently based in New York City. She is artistic director of Armitage Gone!
