Lawrence Fernandes
Lawrence Fernandes (1932-14 November 2005) was a socialist political leader from India. He was brother of George Fernandes. Lawrence Fernandes was born on 1932 to John Joseph Fernandes and Alice Martha Fernandes (''née'' Pinto), in Mangalore to a Mangalorean Catholic family. He was the second of six children, his siblings are George, Michael, Paul, Aloysius, and Richard. During the Emergency, he was arrested on 1 May 1976 by the Government and brutally tortured and held in illegal custody before being transferred to the Bangalore Central Jail, to extract from him whereabouts of his elder brother George Fernandes. Madhu Dandavate, who was arrested and was in the same jail wrote a letter to Indira Gandhi that he is being inhumanely tortured and may even die. George Fernandes
George Mathew Fernandes (3 June 1930 – 29 January 2019) was an Indian trade unionist, statesman, and journalist, who served as the 22nd Defence Minister of India from 1998 until 2004. He was a member of Lok Sabha for over 30 years, starting from Bombay (present-day Mumbai) in 1967 till 2009 mostly representing constituencies from Bihar. He was a key member of the Janata Dal and the founder of the Samata Party, now led by Uday Mandal its President. He held several ministerial portfolios including communication , industry, railways, and defence. In 2020, he was posthumously awarded the Padma Vibhushan, India's second highest civilian award. A native of Mangalore, Fernandes was sent to Bangalore in 1946 to be trained as a priest. In 1949, he moved to Bombay, where he joined the socialist trade union movement. Snehalatha Reddy
Snehalatha Reddy (1932 – 20 January 1977) was an Indian actress, producer and social activist known for her works in Kannada cinema, Kannada theatre, Telugu cinema, and Telugu theatre. She was arrested over her involvement in the Baroda dynamite case and imprisoned for over 8 months during the Emergency in India. She was the co-founder of the Madras Players in the 1960s, the amateur group that staged memorable productions like Ibsen's ''Peer Gynt'', directed by Douglas Alger, besides ''Twelfth Night'' and Tennessee William's ''Night of the Iguana'', directed by Peter Coe. Besides, she acted in, directed, or produced plays such as ''A View from the Bridge'' and ''The House of Bernarda Alba''. Michael Fernandes (born August 1934) is a trade union leader, socialist leader and a senior politician from Bangalore. He is the brother of former union minister George Fernandes. Michael was born in August 1934 to John Joseph Fernandes and Alice Martha Fernandes (''née'' Pinto), in Mangalore to a Mangalorean Catholic family. He was third of six children, his siblings are George, Lawrence, Paul, Aloysius, and Richard. Michael is a physics graduate from Madras University and is a retired engineer from ITI Limited. He is married to Donna Fernandes, who is also a social and women's rights activist and is the founder of ''Vimochana'', a women’s rights group based at Bangalore. He was elected as a corporator from Bangalore for the first time in 1970, contesting as an independent. He was jailed during the Emergency like his brothers George, Lawrence and Aloysius.
