Lavonia-Carnegie Library
The Lavonia Carnegie Library is a historic library building at 28 Hartwell Road in Lavonia, Georgia. It was built in 1911 with funding support from Andrew Carnegie, and is the most architecturally sophisticated building in the small community. It is a single-story buff brick building with Renaissance Revival styling. Founded in 1904 to be the Lavonia public library; it was merged as a branch of the Athens Regional Library System. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. Lavonia, Georgia
Lavonia is a city in Franklin and Hart Counties, Georgia, United States. The population was 2,156 at the 2010 census, up from 1,827 at the 2000 census. Geography Lavonia is located in northeastern Franklin County at (34.436055, -83.106270). A small portion of the town extends southeast into Hart County. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of , of which , or 0.53%, is covered by water. The city lies along Interstate 85, southwest of Greenville, South Carolina, and northeast of Atlanta. History The Cherokee people were indigenous to the area in which Lavonia is located. A sophisticated tribe that typically dwelled in cabins by the 18th century, the Cherokee joined with the British during the American Revolution. When the American colonists prevailed, their land was issued as bounty land to those who had fought in the revolution. Andrew Carnegie (, ; November 25, 1835August 11, 1919) was a Scottish-American industrialist and philanthropist. Carnegie led the expansion of the American steel industry in the late 19th century and became one of the richest Americans in history. Renaissance Revival Architecture
Renaissance Revival architecture (sometimes referred to as "Neo-Renaissance") is a group of 19th century architectural revival styles which were neither Greek Revival nor Gothic Revival but which instead drew inspiration from a wide range of classicizing Italian modes. Under the broad designation Renaissance architecture nineteenth-century architects and critics went beyond the architectural style which began in Florence and Central Italy in the early 15th century as an expression of Renaissance humanism; they also included styles that can be identified as Mannerist or Baroque. Athens Regional Library System
The Athens Regional Library System (ARLS) is a consortium of 11 public libraries across five counties, comprising the Athens – Clarke County metropolitan area as well as Franklin County in northeast Georgia, United States. The ARLS is a member of PINES, a statewide public library that includes, as of 2017, in Georgia. Any member of the ARLS will receive a PINES library card which grants them access to over 8 million books in the PINES circulation. The library is also a member of the Georgia Library Learning Online (GALILEO) which is a resource with over 100 databases for active members to view thousands of journals and scholarly articles.
