Laurie Wallis
Laurie George Wallis (10 September 1922 – 10 January 1984) was an Australian politician. He was an Australian Labor Party member of the Australian House of Representatives from 1969 to 1983, representing the regional South Australian seat of Grey. Wallis was born at Thornleigh in New South Wales and served in World War II from 1939 to 1941. A boilermaker by trade, he moved to South Australia to work for the Commonwealth Railways at Port Augusta in 1943. He was heavily involved in the trade union movement as secretary of the Port Augusta Combined Unions Council from 1947 to 1949 and 1959 to 1970 and secretary of the Port Augusta branch of the Boilermakers and Blacksmiths Society of Australia. He was elected to the House of Representatives at the 1969 federal election, defeating one-term Liberal MP Don Jessop in the seat of Grey, then a marginal seat centred on industrial towns in western South Australia. The Division of Grey is an Australian electoral division in South Australia. The division was one of the seven established when the former Division of South Australia was redistributed on 2 October 1903 and is named for Sir George Grey, who was Governor of South Australia from 1841 to 1845 (and later Prime Minister of New Zealand). Geography Since 1984, federal electoral division boundaries in Australia have been determined at redistributions by a redistribution committee appointed by the Australian Electoral Commission. Redistributions occur for the boundaries of divisions in a particular state, and they occur every seven years, or sooner if a state's representation entitlement changes or when divisions of a state are malapportioned. 1969 Australian Federal Election
The 1969 Australian federal election was held in Australia on 25 October 1969. The incumbent Liberal–Country coalition government, led by Prime Minister John Gorton, won the election with a severely diminished majority over the opposition Labor Party, led by Gough Whitlam despite losing the two party popular vote. Both major parties had changed their leaders in the run-up to the election, the first time this had occurred since 1946. This was the first and only time that a Federal Government won a ninth consecutive term in office. This election saw the arrival of future Prime Minister of Australia Paul Keating in Parliament, winning the safe Labor division of Blaxland in suburban Sydney - a seat he would represent until his resignation following the Keating Government's electoral defeat in 1996. Port Augusta Airport
Port Augusta Airport is an airport located west of Port Augusta, South Australia. Overview The airport serves as a gateway to the city of Port Augusta, as well as isolated mineral projects in the north of the state. Other operations include a base for the Royal Flying Doctor Service which maintains administrative, engineering and hangar facilities for the Pilatus PC-12 fleet at the airport. The majority of traffic at the airport are general aviation related movements, and the Port Augusta Aero Club is also located here. The airfield has previously supported charter operations using larger jets such as the Fokker 100 and British Aerospace 146 under a concession by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority, however these operations are no longer permitted due to apron constraints and jet blast clearances. Boilermakers And Blacksmiths Society Of Australia
The Boilermakers and Blacksmiths Society of Australia (BBS) was an Australian trade union representing boilermakers and blacksmiths between 1965 and 1972. It was established on 1 January 1966 with the amalgamation of the Boilermakers' Society of Australia and the Blacksmiths' Society of Australia. Though widely described as the formation of a new union, it inherited the industrial registration of the Boilermakers' Society. The union was associated with a "militant left-wing" group within the Metal Trades Federation. The BBS was the principal union involved in the 1971 Harco work-in, in which rank-and-file workers seized control of a heavy engineering factory in the Sydney suburb of Campbelltown to protest the sacking of five boilermakers. Don Jessop
Donald Scott Jessop (21 June 1927 – 21 May 2018) was an Australian politician. Born in Adelaide, he was educated at state schools and then the University of Adelaide, after which he became an optometrist at Port Augusta, South Australia, Port Augusta. He was a councillor with City of Port Augusta, Port Augusta City. In 1966, he was elected to the Australian House of Representatives as the Liberal Party of Australia, Liberal member for Division of Grey, Grey, defeating sitting Australian Labor Party, Labor member Jack Mortimer. He was defeated in 1969, but in 1970 was elected to the Australian Senate, Senate. He remained in the Senate until he was defeated in 1987. He had been dropped by his party, and chose to run as an Independent Liberal. Jessop died at his Adelaide home, aged 90, on 21 May 2018.
