Laurie Tully
Laurence John Tully (30 July 1917 – 27 June 1981) was an Australian politician and a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1946 until 1965. He was a member of the Labor Party (ALP) . Tully was born in Sydney and was the son of Jack Tully the member for Goulburn in the Legislative Assembly between 1925 and 1946. He was educated at St Patrick's College, Goulburn and the law faculty of the University of Sydney. He was called to the bar in 1942. During World War Two, he served with the Royal Australian Air Force. After an unsuccessful campaign in the seat of Temora in 1944, Tully was elected to the parliament as the Labor member for Goulburn at the 1946 by-election caused by the resignation of his father. Goulburn, New South Wales
Goulburn ( ) is a regional city in the Southern Tablelands of the Australian state of New South Wales, approximately south-west of Sydney, and north-east of Canberra. It was proclaimed as Australia's first inland city through letters patent by Queen Victoria in 1863. Goulburn had a population of 23,835 at June 2018. Goulburn is the seat of Goulburn Mulwaree Council. Goulburn is a railhead on the Main Southern line, a service centre for the surrounding pastoral industry, and also stopover for those traveling on the Hume Highway. It has a central park and many historic buildings. It is also home to the monument the Big Merino, a sculpture that is the world's largest concrete-constructed sheep. Ron Brewer (politician)
Ronald Alfred St Clair Brewer (8 April 1921 – 16 June 2003) was an Australian politician. He was the Country Party member for Goulburn in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1965 to 1984. Born in Watsons Bay, Sydney to farmer Alfred George Brewer and Doris Griffin, he was educated at Gunning, Goulburn and Naremburn, leaving school at the age of 14. He became a rural worker before enlisting in the armed forces in 1938, serving in the 7th Light Horse Regiment of the 2nd Light Horse Brigade until 1940, when he joined the Royal Australian Air Force. He was discharged as medically unfit in 1942, and joined the Second Australian Imperial Force, being stationed in New Guinea as a warrant officer. He was discharged from the armed forces in 1946. Brewer married Dorothy Sorrell on 16 November 1946, with whom he would have six children. 1965 New South Wales State Election
The 1965 New South Wales state election was held on 1 May 1965. It was conducted in single member constituencies with compulsory preferential voting and was held on boundaries created at a 1961 redistribution. The election was for all of the 94 seats in the Legislative Assembly. Issues In May 1965, Labor had been in power for 24 years and 56-year-old Jack Renshaw, who had been seen as a generational change for the party leadership, had been premier for one year. Yet Renshaw had difficulty adjusting to a televised campaign; and his manner, the result of spending much of his early life in remote New South Wales, had limited appeal to urban voters. The longevity of the government was an issue promoted by the opposition which described it as being composed of "tired old men"; indeed, six members of Renshaw's cabinet were 65 years old or older, and most of them had been in cabinet during Labor's entire 24-year run in government. The Australian Labor Party (New South Wales Branch), also known as NSW Labor, is the New South Wales branch of the Australian Labor Party. The parliamentary leader is elected from and by the members of the party caucus, comprising all party members in the Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council. The party factions have a strong influence on the election of the leader.
