Malcolm Laurie
Malcolm Laurie FRSE FLS (27 February 1866 – 16 July 1932) was a Scottish zoologist and palaeontologist. Biography He was born in Brunstane House south of Portobello, Edinburgh on 27 February 1866, the son of Simon Somerville Laurie and his wife, Catherine Ann Hibburd. He was educated at Edinburgh Academy 1876 to 1880. He studied Science, first at Edinburgh University then at Cambridge University where he graduated BA in 1889. He returned to Edinburgh for postgraduate studies and gained his doctorate (DSc) in 1894. On gaining his doctorate he received an immediate post as Professor of Zoology at St Mungo's College, Glasgow. In 1918 he returned to Edinburgh to lecture in Zoology at both the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. Robert Laurie (bishop)
Robert Laurie or Lawrie MA (c.1606–1678) was a seventeenth-century Church of Scotland prelate. He was minister of Stirling before becoming, after the Restoration and the reinstitution of episcopal order in Scotland, Dean of Edinburgh. Life He was the son of Rev Joseph Laurie minister of Perth. He graduated MA from St Andrews University in 1636 and was licensed to preach by the Presbytery of Perth in 1641. In 1644 he was ordained at Trinity College Church in Edinburgh an in 1648 translated to the nearby Tron Kirk and to the High Kirk of St Giles in 1662. In 1671 he became Bishop of Brechin, being consecrated at Holyrood House in Edinburgh on 14 July 1672. This was largely a nominal title was allowed to return to minister at Holy Trinity in 1674. He served as Bishop of Brechin until his death in March 1678. The historian Robert Keith referred to him as "a celebrated preacher, and a man of moderation". (Robert) Douglas Laurie (27 October 1874 – 17 April 1953) was the founder and first president of the Association of University Teachers. Career He was born in Birkenhead and educated at Birkenhead School. He took a job in a bank until 1899 before resuming his studies at Liverpool University before gaining a third class degree in zoology from Merton College, Oxford. After working as a demonstrator and assistant lecturer in the department of comparative anatomy at Oxford, he moved back to the University of Liverpool in 1906 also as a demonstrator and assistant lecturer. From 1911 he also lectured in embryology and genetics. During the First World War he served as a captain in the Royal Army Medical Corps, and was twice mentioned in despatches. Admiral Sir Robert Laurie, 6th Baronet KCB (25 May 1764 – 7 January 1848) was an officer of the Royal Navy who served during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. He rose through the ranks after his entry, fighting as a lieutenant under Howe at the Glorious First of June, and being wounded in the action. Shortly after he served in the West Indies and off the American coast, where he operated successfully against enemy raiders and privateers, he was rewarded with the command of the frigate , and in 1805 fought an action with a superior French opponent, ''Ville de Milan''. He was forced to surrender his ship after several hours of fighting, but so heavily damaged the Frenchman that both she and the captured British vessel were taken shortly afterwards when another British frigate , arrived on the scene. William George Ranald Mundell Laurie (4 May 1915 – 19 September 1998) was an English physician, Olympic rowing champion and gold medallist. He was the father of actor Hugh Laurie. Early life, education and rowing career Laurie was born in Grantchester, Cambridgeshire, in 1915, the son of William Walker Laurie (1882–1976) and Margaret Grieve (née Mundell) (1886–1959). Sir Peter Laurie (3 March 1778 – 3 December 1861) was a British politician who served as Lord Mayor of London. He was appointed Sheriff of the City of London for 1823 and elected Lord Mayor for 1832. From 1838 until his death, he was Chairman of the Union Bank of London. He also worked as a saddler, who supplied saddles for the Indian army, and wrote two books on prison reform. He was knighted in 1824 and is buried at Highgate Cemetery. Brigadier Sir Percy Robert Laurie (5 November 1880 – 16 February 1962) was a British Army and police officer. Laurie was born in Sevenoaks, Kent, and educated at Harrow School. He was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the 3rd London Volunteer Rifle Corps in August 1901 and transferred to the Regular Army in the Royal Scots Greys in March 1902. He was stationed with his regiment in South Africa for the aftermath of the Second Boer War, and promoted Lieutenant in October 1903. In October 1909 he was appointed regimental adjutant. James Park Dawson Laurie (1846 – 2 December 1928), generally known as "Park Laurie", was a pastoralist and politician in the colony of South Australia. History Laurie was born at Kangatong station, near Warrnambool, Victoria, the third son of the (Presbyterian) Rev. Alexander Laurie (c. 1817 – 5 February 1854). The Rev. Laurie, of Covington, Lanarkshire, and his wife Janet Laurie, née Nicol, (c. 1822 – 25 July 1903) had been sent out to Portland, Victoria to establish a church there in 1841. In 1842 he founded a Presbyterian school, run by J. S. Stewart. In 1848 Rev.
