Laurence Le Guay
Laurence Craddock Le Guay (25 December 1916 – 2 February 1990), was an Australian fashion photographer. Biography Laurence Craddock Le Guay was born on 25 December 1916 at Chatswood, New South Wales, Chatswood Sydney, of locally born parents Charles Sidney Le Guay, company secretary, and Doris Alma Le Guay, née Usher. Photography Le Guay's schoolboy hobby of photography was encouraged by Harold Cazneaux and from 1935, at age eighteen, he worked as an assistant at Dayne portrait studio, before opening his own studio in Martin Place in 1937, to concentrate on illustrative and fashion photography. He joined the Pictorialism, Pictorialist The Sydney Camera Circle, Sydney Camera Circle in 1940 and exhibited with them at various national and international photographic salons. He began producing photomontage work of a more Surrealist style around the contemporary theme of the Machine Age and incorporating the heroic nude, most significant being ''The Progenitors'' (1938). Chatswood, New South Wales
Chatswood is a major business and residential district in the Lower North Shore of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia, 10 kilometres north of the Sydney central business district. It is the administrative centre of the local government area of the City of Willoughby. It is often colloquially referred to as "Chatty". History The Cammeraygal people inhabited the area for at least 35,000 to 50,000 years prior to European arrival. Chatswood was named after Charlotte Harnett, wife of then Mayor of Willoughby and a pioneer of the district, Richard Harnett, and the original "wooded" nature of the area. The moniker derives from her nickname "Chattie" and was shortened from Chattie's Wood to Chatswood in the mid-1800’s. The Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions (ANARE ) is the historical name for the Australian Antarctic Program (AAp) administered for Australia by the Australian Antarctic Division (AAD). History Australia has had a long involvement in south polar regions since as early as Douglas Mawson's Australasian Antarctic Expedition in 1911. Further Australian exploration of the Antarctic continent was conducted during the British Australian and New Zealand Antarctic Research Expedition (BANZARE), which was conducted over the years 1929–1931. The Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions were established in 1947 with expeditions to Macquarie Island and Heard Island. The Australian Centre for Photography (ACP) is a not-for-profit photography gallery in Darlinghurst, Sydney, Australia that was established in 1973. ACP also provides part-time courses and community programs. It is one of the longest running contemporary art spaces in Australia. The Australian Centre for Photography has published ''Photofile,'' a biannual photography journal, since 1983. The ACP is a charity. Due to funding pressures during 2020, it ceased its activities from 16 December 2020 pending a restructure. Function The Australian Centre for Photography provided a photography gallery and also part-time courses and community programs.
