Laura Fish Judd
Laura Fish Judd (April 2, 1804October 2, 1872) was an American missionary, teacher and historian noted for her works on the Hawaiian Kingdom, Kingdom of Hawaii. In 1827, she married Gerrit P. Judd, an American missionary who was appointed advisor and minister of finance to King Kamehameha III. Biography Laura Fish was born to a family of seven to Elias Fish and Sybil Fish (née Williams) on April 2, 1804 in Plainfield, New York. She grew up in poverty after her mother's premature death. Her father also suffered an accident that left him crippled. Judd had to stay among relatives' households and village schools until she started teaching at age 16. She continued to work in this capacity to raise money to fund her education at Clinton Female Seminary in Oneida County, New York. Judd became a Protestant missionary when she was nineteen and was involved in missionary work in Mexico, New York. Plainfield is a town in Otsego County, New York, United States. The population was 915 at the 2010 census. The Town of Plainfield is located in the northwestern corner of Otsego County. History The town was first settled ''circa'' 1793, near Plainfield Center. Plainfield was established from part of the Town of Richfield in 1799. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. The western town line is marked by the Unadilla River and is also the county line of Madison County and a small part of Oneida County. Kamehameha I (; Kalani Paiea Wohi o Kaleikini Kealiikui Kamehameha o Iolani i Kaiwikapu kaui Ka Liholiho Kūnuiākea; – May 8 or 14, 1819), also known as Kamehameha the Great, was the conqueror and first ruler of the Kingdom of Hawaii. The state of Hawaii gave a statue of him to the National Statuary Hall Collection in Washington, D.C. as one of two statues it is entitled to install there.
