''Laughter in the Rain'' is a 1974 British album by American pop star Neil Sedaka. It was released in the UK in 1974 on the Polydor label. The album was recorded in the US at Clover Recording Studios in Hollywood over the course of several sessions from November–December 1973. The album entered the UK charts on 22 June 1974 rising to No.17 and stayed in the charts for 10 weeks. The album gained a Silver Certificate from the BPI. Several songs from this album were imported into the United States for the Rocket album ''Sedaka's Back'' in the fall of 1974. The album contains Sedaka's tribute to American actress and singer Betty Grable. She had died just a few months earlier. Neil Sedaka
Neil Sedaka (; born March 13, 1939) is an American singer-songwriter and pianist. Since his music career began in 1957, he has sold millions of records worldwide and has written or co-written over 500 songs for himself and other artists, collaborating mostly with lyricists Howard Greenfield, Howard "Howie" Greenfield and Phil Cody. After a short-lived tenure as a founding member of the doo-wop group the Tokens, Sedaka achieved a string of hit singles over the late 1950s and early 1960s, including "Oh! Carol" (1959), "Calendar Girl (song), Calendar Girl" (1960), "Happy Birthday Sweet Sixteen" (1961) and "Breaking Up Is Hard to Do" (1962). ''Sedaka's Back'' is a compilation album by American singer-songwriter Neil Sedaka. The record, composed of selections from his previous three albums, which had been released only in the UK,"Q Rock Stars Encyclopedia" by Dafydd Rees and Luke Crampton, Dorling Kindersley, 1999 was released on Elton John's label, The Rocket Record Company, in 1974. Three singles were released from this album: "Laughter in the Rain" (a #1 hit), "The Immigrant (Neil Sedaka song), The Immigrant" (dedicated to John Lennon) and "That's When the Music Takes Me." The latter two songs were both Top 40 hits. Also included were songs that were turned into hits by other artists: "Solitaire (Neil Sedaka song), Solitaire" (The Carpenters) and "Love Will Keep Us Together" (The Captain & Tennille). The Kent Music Report was a weekly record chart of Australian music singles and albums which was compiled by music enthusiast David Kent from May 1974 through to January 1999. The chart was re-branded the Australian Music Report (AMR) in July 1987. From June 1988, the Australian Recording Industry Association, which had been using the top 50 portion of the report under licence since mid-1983, chose to produce their own listing as the ARIA Charts. Before the Kent Report, ''Go-Set'' magazine published weekly Top-40 Singles from 1966, and Album charts from 1970 until the magazine's demise in August 1974. "Laughter in the Rain" is a song composed and recorded by Neil Sedaka, with lyrics by Phil Cody. It includes a 20-second saxophone solo by Jim Horn. Background The song was released on Elton John's Rocket Records. After hearing a version of "Laughter in the Rain" by singer Lea Roberts on the radio several weeks before the planned release of his single, Sedaka phoned Elton John to have MCA Records rush the Sedaka version to release within five days. The opening chord of the chorus was based on that used by John in "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road", which Sedaka has described as a "drop-dead chord." He combined that with a pentatonic melody inspired by Aaron Copland. Cody claims to have written the lyrics in about five minutes after smoking marijuana and falling asleep under a tree for a couple of hours. "The Immigrant" is a 1975 single written by Neil Sedaka anPhil Codyand performed by Sedaka. The single was the second release from his album, ''Sedaka's Back''. "The Immigrant" was dedicated to John Lennon and the immigration problems that he faced. The single peaked at number 22 on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100 and spent one week at number one on the Easy Listening chart in May 1975. Sedaka has referred to "The Immigrant" as his most controversial song and the only time he ever publicly waded into politics as a performer. According to Philip Cody, the song's lyric writer, it was originally written as a tribute to his father, Anthony Feliciotto, who came to America from Sicily in 1930. The Rocket Record Company was a record label founded by Elton John, along with Bernie Taupin, Gus Dudgeon, Steve Brown and others, in 1973. The company was named after the hit song " Rocket Man". The label was originally distributed in the UK by Island and in the US by MCA Records, both of which Elton John was also signed to (after 1976).
