Latvian Olympic Committee
The Latvian Olympic Committee ( or LOK) is a non-profit organization that is the National Olympic Committee for Latvia. Its headquarters are in Riga. History The Committee was created on 23 April 1922. In 1923 it received a notice from International Olympic Committee that Latvia could take part in the next Olympic Games. After the occupation of Latvia by the Soviet Union in 1940, its activity was suspended. During this time, Latvians competed as part of USSR delegation. The committee was reformed on 17 September 1988 and recognised by the IOC in 1991. Biathlon At The 2006 Winter Olympics – Men's Individual
The Men's 20 kilometre individual biathlon competition at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy was held on 11 February, at Cesana San Sicario. The individual race consisted of five laps around a four kilometre loop with four stops at the shooting range. During each shooting section, each biathlete fired five shots at five targets. Misses resulted in penalties of one minute per miss being added to the time for the course. The first and third shooting sections were conducted in the prone position, while the second and fourth were done standing. A total of 88 biathletes competed, starting with a staggered start and 30 seconds behind each competitor. Michael Greis of Germany hit 19 of the 20 targets and used a net time of 54:23.0 (with one penalty minute) to clinch the gold medal, 16 seconds ahead of Norway's Ole Einar Bjørndalen. Gerda Krūmiņa (born 26 November 1984 in Cēsis) is a Latvian biathlete. Krūmiņa competed in the 2006 and 2010 Winter Olympics for Latvia. Her best finish was 18th, as part of the 2006 Latvian relay team. Her best individual showing was 48th, in the 2010 sprint. In 2006, she finished 74th in the sprint and 70th in the individual. The Women's 10 kilometre biathlon pursuit competition at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy was held on 18 February, at Cesana San Sicario. Competitors in this biathlon raced over five loops of a 2.0 kilometre skiing course, shooting twenty times, ten prone and ten standing. Each miss required a competitor to ski a 150-metre penalty loop. The starting order for the pursuit was based on the results of the sprint; the top 60 finishers in that race qualified for the pursuit. In addition, each racer's final deficit behind sprint winner Florence Baverel-Robert corresponded to their starting deficit in the pursuit; Anna Carin Olofsson, who finished 2 seconds behind Fischer in the sprint, started 2 seconds after her in the pursuit.
