Latin Quarter (nightclub)
Latin Quarter (also known as The LQ) was a nightclub in New York City. The club originally opened in 1942 and featured big-name acts. In recent years, it has been a focus of hip hop, reggaeton and salsa music. Its history is similar to that of its competitor, the Copacabana. Times Square location The club's original location near Times Square was at 200 West 48th Street on a trapezoidal lot between Broadway and Seventh Avenue. It opened as the Palais Royale in 1900, and Norman Bel Geddes had designed the interior. It was then occupied by the Cotton Club, which had left Harlem, from 1936 to 1940. Harvey Earl Wilson (May 3, 1907 – January 16, 1987) was an American journalist, gossip columnist, and author, perhaps best known for his 6-day a week nationally syndicated newspaper column, ''It Happened Last Night''. Early life and career Wilson was born in Rockford, in Mercer County in western Ohio, to Arthur Wilson, a farmer, and Chloe Huffman Wilson. The 99th Infantry Division was formed in 1942 and deployed overseas in 1944. The "Checkerboard" or "Battle Babies" division landed at the French port of Le Havre and proceeded northeast to Belgium. During the heavy fighting in the Battle of the Bulge, the unit suffered many casualties, yet tenaciously held its defensive position. In March 1945, the 99th advanced into the Rhineland, crossing the Rhine River at Remagen on March 11. After fighting in the Ruhr area, the unit moved southward into Bavaria, where it was located at the end of the war. The 99th Infantry Division, the "Checkerboard" division, gained its nickname from the division's insignia. The insignia was devised upon the 99th's formation in 1942, when the division was headquartered in the city of Pittsburgh. Theodore Leopold Friedman (June 6, 1890 – August 25, 1971), known as Ted Lewis, was an American entertainer, bandleader, singer, and musician. He fronted a band and touring stage show that presented a combination of jazz, comedy, and nostalgia that was a hit with the American public before and after World War II.
