Latin Playboys
Latin Playboys was a musical group formed by David Hidalgo, Louie Pérez, Mitchell Froom and Tchad Blake, active in the 1990s. History The band began with a series of demo recordings made by Hidalgo on a home cassette tape four-track machine. The demos were intended for Hidalgo's main group, Los Lobos, but producer/keyboardist Mitchell Froom thought the demos were interesting enough on their own to justify a new side-project. With Los Lobos member Louie Pérez, and Froom's frequent production partner Tchad Blake, Latin Playboys was officially formed. The group released two albums, ''Latin Playboys'', in 1994, and ''Dose'', in 1999. The songs "Manifold de Amour" and "Forever Night Shade Mary," both from the 1994 self-titled debut album, are featured on Desperado (film)#Soundtrack, the soundtrack album for the 1995 film ''Desperado (film), Desperado''. ''Latin Playboys'' is the debut album of experimental rock band Latin Playboys. Critical reception Robert Christgau of ''The Village Voice'' named the album the best release of 1994 and described it as "impressionistic fragments coalescing into a self-sustaining aural counterreality." Writing for ''The A.V. Club'', Joshua Klein called the album a "casual masterpiece" consisting of "found sounds, low-fidelity recording techniques, distorted drum loops, deep-dungeon blues, fragmented guitar parts, and some gorgeous songs." In his AllMusic review, Richie Unterberger stated that the album's "lyrics and song structures are almost impressionistic in tone, creating an effect similar to listening to your car radio as stations drift in and out of reach while you drive along the Mexican border." Louie Pérez
Louis Frausto Pérez, Jr. (born January 29, 1953) is an American songwriter, percussionist and guitarist for Los Lobos and Latin Playboys. Pérez started with Los Lobos playing primarily jarana (a small Mexican guitar) and singing. He is one of the founding members of Los Lobos, established in 1973. As Los Lobos ventured into Norteño music and rock, Pérez became the drummer, first with just a snare drum. In 1990, Victor Bisetti was hired to be a combination drum tech, drum coach and percussionist. As time went on, Bisetti took a more active role as drummer, allowing Pérez to move back to the front of the stage and start playing guitar. Bisetti was replaced in 2003 by Ruben (Cougar) Estrada. Estrada was replaced by Enrique "Bugs" Gonzalez in 2013. Pérez continues to be Los Lobos' primary lyricist. Dose (Latin Playboys Album)
''Dose'' is the second studio album by the American alternative rock band Latin Playboys. It was released on March 2, 1999 on Atlantic Records. The album was produced by Mitchell Froom and engineered by Tchad Blake, both of whom are also members of the band. As the album's engineer, Blake recorded all of the background sounds that appear on the album. Recording ''Dose'' was primarily recorded at the home of one of the band's members, David Hidalgo, on an 8-track tape. It was engineered at Tchad Blake's Sunset Sound Factory in Hollywood. Release and marketing ''Dose'' was released on March 2, 1999 by Atlantic Records, which decided not to release a single from it. Richie Unterberger (born January 19, 1962) is an American author and journalist whose focus is popular music and travel writing. Life and writing Unterberger attended the University of Pennsylvania, where he wrote for the university newspaper ''The Daily Pennsylvanian'' and in the early 1980s was a deejay on the Penn radio station, WXPN-FM. Just prior to graduating in late 1982, he started reviewing records for '' Op'' magazine, which marked the start of his career as a freelance writer. ''Desperado'' is a 1995 American neo-Western action film written, produced, and directed by Robert Rodriguez. It is the second part of Rodriguez's ''Mexico Trilogy''. A demo is a way for a musician to approximate their ideas in a fixed format, such as cassette tape, compact disc, or digital audio files, and to thereby pass along those ideas to record labels, producers, or other artists. Mitchell Froom
Mitchell Froom (born June 29, 1953) is an American musician and record producer. He was a member of the bands Gamma and Latin Playboys, and is currently the keyboardist for Crowded House. He has produced albums for several artists, including Richard Thompson, Los Lobos, Suzanne Vega, and Vonda Shepard. Career Froom began his career as a keyboard player in Sonoma County, California. The band Crossfire featured two keyboard players; Mitchell on one side of the stage and brother David on the other with Gary Pihl on guitar. He also played keyboards on the Ronnie Montrose-led group Gamma's third album '' Gamma 3'', as well as '' It's a Beautiful Day's'' David LaFlamme's 1978 solo album ''Inside Out''. David Kent Hidalgo (born October 6, 1954, in Los Angeles.) is an American singer-songwriter, best known for his work with the band Los Lobos. Hidalgo frequently plays musical instruments such as accordion, violin, 6-string banjo, cello, requinto jarocho, percussion, drums and guitar as a session musician on other artists' releases.
