Latin America And The Caribbean Geoparks Network
Latin America is represented under the Global Geoparks Network by the geoparks of the Latin American Geoparks Network (Red GEOLAC). As of 2019, it includes 7 UNESCO Global Geoparks and further projects are in progress seeking UNESCO status or that of national geopark in South America, Central America and the Caribbean UNESCO Global Geoparks Aspiring and planned geoparks According to the register of GeoLAC, the following geopark projects are in an aspiring phase (documentation close to submission to UNESCO or already submitted), or under planning, in a hatching phase. The Latin American Geoparks Network History Geoparks incitatives in Latin America have been the subject of geoscience conferences since 2001 and the first member, Araripe, Brazil was admitted to the Global Geoparks Network in 2005. Comarca Minera Geopark
The Comarca Minera Geopark is located in the center-south of the Mexican state of Hidalgo (state), Hidalgo. It extends over nine Municipalities of Mexico, municipalities: Atotonilco el Grande, Epazoyucan, Huasca de Ocampo, Mineral del Chico, Mineral de la Reforma, Mineral del Monte, Omitlán de Juárez, Pachuca de Soto and Singuilucan. These municipalities are articulated by a network of 31 geosites, elected because they express the geological history of the territory and highlight the relationship between mining and metallurgy, and the historical spaces and cultural development of the region. Nazca Plate
The Nazca Plate or Nasca Plate, named after the Nazca region of southern Peru, is an oceanic tectonic plate in the eastern Pacific Ocean basin off the west coast of South America. The ongoing subduction, along the Peru–Chile Trench, of the Nazca Plate under the South American Plate is largely responsible for the Andean orogeny. The Nazca Plate is bounded on the west by the Pacific Plate and to the south by the Antarctic Plate through the East Pacific Rise and the Chile Rise respectively. The movement of the Nazca Plate over several hotspots has created some volcanic islands as well as east-west running seamount chains that subduct under South America. Basaltic Prisms Of Santa María Regla
The Basaltic Prisms of Santa María Regla are tall Columnar jointing, columnar joints of basalt rock near Huasca de Ocampo in the Mexico, Mexican state of Hidalgo (state), Hidalgo, that line a ravine through which water runs from the San Antonio Dam. This ravine area was part of the Santa María Regla Hacienda and was first promoted by Alexander von Humboldt in 1803. The canyon walls, called the Barranca de Santa María Regla, are lined by polygonal columns between high, with five or six sides each. The basalt columns were created by the slow cooling of volcanic lava. The visible columns are backed by even more polygonal basalt columns. There are two waterfalls. The higher one has its water supplemented by diversions from nearby dams. The lower one is called the Cascada de la Rosa. Barranca De Metztitlán
Barranca de Metztitlán is a biosphere reserve in Hidalgo state of Mexico. It is protected for its dramatic scenery of steep cliffs and deep winding canyons, and its distinctive flora and fauna. Geography The reserve includes the deep and narrow barranca, or canyon, of the Metztitlán River, also known as the Venados River. The barranca is located on a semi-arid plateau which lies between the Sierra Madre Oriental to the east and the Sierra de Pachuca to the west. The Metztitlán River flows generally north–northwest.
