''The Last Full Measure'' ( (), ()) is a novel by American author Jeffrey Shaara, published on May 2, 2000, by Ballantine Books. It is the sequel to '' The Killer Angels'' and '' Gods and Generals''. Together, the three novels complete an American Civil War trilogy relating events from 1858 to 1865. History The novel, along with the second part of the trilogy, ''Gods and Generals'' (1996) were written by Shaara after the death in of his father, Michael Shaara, author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning ''The Killer Angels''. Employing the same style as the previous two books in the series, ''The Last Full Measure'' is written as a first-person narrative from various officers of the Union and Confederate Armies as they regroup after Gettysburg and move into the final two years of the war. Characters featured include General Robert E. Lee, newly promoted Brigadier General Joshua Chamberlain, and Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant. ''The Last Full Measure'' is a 2019 American war drama film written and directed by Todd Robinson. It follows the efforts of fictional Pentagon staffer Scott Huffman and many veterans to see the Medal of Honor awarded to William H. Pitsenbarger, a United States Air Force Pararescueman who flew in helicopter rescue missions during the Vietnam War to aid downed soldiers and pilots. Based on true events, the film stars Sebastian Stan, Christopher Plummer, William Hurt, Ed Harris, Samuel L. Jackson, Jeremy Irvine, and Peter Fonda. It was the final film appearance of Fonda, who died before the film’s release; and Plummer's final on screen appearance before his death in 2021, though it had filmed prior to ''Knives Out'' which was released before it. "The Last Full Measure" is a short story by American writer George Alec Effinger, originally published in '' Isaac Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine'' in 1978. Plot summary Bo Steaffler, a young US Army corporal, is participating in the 1944 D-Day landings. Shortly after he hits the beach, he is killed by an explosion. However, he awakes to find himself uninjured and imprisoned in a dark dank cell. He is confronted by a strange creature with hypnotically luminous eyes, identified only as 'Aensa'. The creature communicates telepathically with him, questioning Steaffler as to the weapons and strategies used in the landings, but he's only a corporal and doesn't know much. The Aensa sends him back to the beaches and when he is again killed, recovers him again. Steaffler, a pulp science fiction enthusiast, eventually realises that the creature is part of a potential invasion of Earth and seeks information on its defences.
