Roger Black
Roger Anthony Black MBE (born 31 March 1966) is a retired English athlete who competed internationally for Great Britain and England. During his athletics career, he won individual silver medals in the 400 metres sprint at both the Olympic Games and World Championships, two individual gold medals at the European Championships, and 4 × 400 metres relay gold medals at both the World and European Championships. Since retiring from athletics, he has worked as a television presenter and motivational speaker. In 2008, Black joined forces with fellow athlete Steve Backley and founded BackleyBlack LLP. Black has a collection of fifteen medals from major senior athletics competitions to add to his two European junior championship gold medals. Black won five national outdoor championships at 400 metres, and one at 200 metres. As of July 2022, Black remains ranked joint third in the all-time Great Britain lists for the 400 metres. The Aérospatiale/BAC Concorde () is a retired Franco-British supersonic airliner jointly developed and manufactured by Sud Aviation (later Aérospatiale) and the British Aircraft Corporation (BAC). Studies started in 1954, and France and the UK signed a treaty establishing the development project on 29 November 1962, as the programme cost was estimated at £70 million (£ in ). James Arnot Hamilton
Sir James Arnot Hamilton (2 May 192324 May 2012) was a British aircraft designer who helped design Concorde and the SEPECAT Jaguar. He also served as the permanent secretary of the Department for Education. Specialising in wing design, he was largely responsible for Concorde's distinctive wing. Sean Fraser (born 30 April 1990 in Edinburgh, Scotland) is a Scottish swimmer. Fraser attended Lasswade High School. He won a bronze medal for Great Britain in the S8 100m backstroke at the Beijing Paralympics 2008, and a gold medal in the 2009 British Championships for the MC 100 m backstroke. Thomas Penson De Quincey (; 15 August 17858 December 1859) was an English writer, essayist, and literary critic, best known for his ''Confessions of an English Opium-Eater'' (1821). Paul Frederick De Quincey
Paul Frederick de Quincey (26 November 1828 – 15 April 1894) was a 19th-century Member of Parliament in Auckland, New Zealand. Early life De Quincey was born at Grasmere, Westmoreland. He was the son of the great English writer Thomas De Quincey. He received his education at the High School, Edinburgh, and at the Lasswade School, near that city. He entered the army 2 May 1845 as ensign in the 70th (Surrey) Regiment, and served with distinction in India from 1846, including being present with the 80th (Staffordshire Volunteers) Regiment at the Battle of Sobraon in February 1846, during the first Anglo-Sikh War, for which he was awarded the campaign medal. He became a lieutenant on 31 July 1846, and captain on 9 January 1858. Christopher Anderson (theologian)
Christopher Anderson (19 February 1782 – 18 February 1852) was a Scottish theological writer and preacher. Biography He was born at Edinburgh, 19 February 1782, the son of William Anderson, a merchant. He began life in an insurance office, but gave up his secular work and studied for the ministry, with the aim of becoming a missionary: his background was formed by followers of Robert and James Haldane. Weak health prevented his accepting a missionary appointment, and he then became minister of a small congregation in Edinburgh, known as "English Baptists", at the Charlotte Chapel. He held this post until shortly before his death. Anderson was interested in the Scottish Highlands, and was a founder of the Gaelic School Society. He established the independent Edinburgh Bible Society. He supported the Serampore mission in India, travelled to explain its objects, and collected funds on its behalf. James Edward Tierney Aitchison
James Edward Tierney Aitchison MD LLD CIE (28 October 1835 – 30 September 1898) was a Scottish surgeon and botanist. He worked as British Commissioner to Ladakh, India in 1872 and collected numerous specimens from the region and published catalogues of plants including those of economic interest. The plant genus '' Aitchisonia'' was named after him by Helmsley but the name is no longer in use. In authorship he is normally known as J. E. T. Aitchison. Life Aitchison was born in Neemuch in central India the second son of Major James Aitchison of the East India Company of Scotland. His mother Mary Turner was the sister of John William Turner and through her he took an interest in plants at an early age. Eco-Schools is an international programme of the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) that aims to “empower students to be the change our sustainable world needs by engaging them in fun, action-orientated, and socially responsible learning.” Each school follows a seven step change process and aims to “empowers young people to lead processes and actions wherever they can.” Over time and through commitment to the Eco-Schools Seven Step process, improvements will be seen in both the learning outcomes, attitude, and behaviour of students and the local community, and ultimately the local environment.
