Lasantha Wickrematunge
Lasantha Manilal Wickrematunge ( si, ලසන්ත වික්රමතුංග, ta, லசந்த விக்கிரமதுங்க; 5 April 1958 – 8 January 2009) was a high-profile Sri Lankan journalist, politician, broadcaster and human rights activist who was assassinated in January 2009. Wickrematunge was the founder of ''The Sunday Leader'' newspaper and Leader Publications and was a virulent critic of the Mahinda Rajapaksa government, and had been locked in a legal battle with Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who was defence secretary at the time and was spearheading the battle against the LTTE rebels. His assassination sent shockwaves across the country, as he was one of the nation's most influential journalists and most well known political figures and raised questions about freedom of expression in the country. Ranjit Abeysuriya
Deshamanya Ranjith Abeysuriya, PC (1932 - 23 May 2014) was a Sri Lankan lawyer. He was the chairman of the National Police Commission, director public prosecutions of the Attorney General's Department, president of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka and member of the Law Commission of Sri Lanka. He was educated at Mahinda College, Galle and the Royal College, Colombo before attending the newly established law department of the University of Ceylon along with Lakshman Kadirgamar. Passing the law exams at the Sri Lanka Law College he became an advocate in 1955 and began his practice in Galle. Sir George Desmond Lorenz de Silva, (13 December 1939 – 2 June 2018) was a British criminal law barrister and international lawyer who served as the United Nations Chief War Crimes Prosecutor in Sierra Leone. Early life Desmond de Silva was of Sri Lanka, Sri Lankan, English, and Scottish descent, and comes from a family of lawyers. He was the son of Fredrick de Silva MBE, formerly Ceylon's ambassador to France and Switzerland, and his wife Esme Gregg de Silva; a grandson of George E. de Silva; and a second cousin of Lasantha Wickrematunge. Edmund Fredrick Lorenz de Silva, (1912 – 1993) was a Ceylonese lawyer and politician. He was the Mayor of Kandy, Member of Parliament and Sri Lanka's Ambassador to France. Early life and legal career Born to George E. de Silva a prominent proctor and legislator, he was educated at Hillwood Girls' School (Hillwood College, Kandy); Trinity College, Kandy and at S. Thomas' College, Mount Lavinia, where he was classmates of Dudley Senanayake. He returned to Trinity College for his final year. Agnes De Silva
Agnes Marion de Silva ( Nell; 1885-1961) was a Sri Lankan women's activist from a progressive society who, during the 1930s, pioneered issues related to women and in particular adult suffrage or franchise for women in Sri Lanka. She was instrumental in establishing the Women’s Franchise Union of Sri Lanka. Biography Agnes Marion Nell was born in Colombo on 1885. She was the only daughter of Paul Nell of a Burgher Christian aristocratic family, who was an engineer in the Kandy province.
