Larry Stanley
Larry Stanley (19 May 1896 – 21 September 1987) was an Irish Gaelic footballer who played at senior level for the Kildare and Dublin county teams. Regarded as one of the greatest players of his generation, Stanley made his first appearance on the inter-county scene during the 1916 championship and was a regular member of the starting fifteen for both Kildare and Dublin until his retirement after the 1930 championship. During that time he won two All-Ireland medals and three Leinster medals. Stanley captained Kildare to the All-Ireland title in 1919. At club level Stanley enjoyed a hugely successful career with Caragh, winning two county club championship. He also played with O'Tooles and the Garda club in Dublin. Prosperous, County Kildare
Prosperous () is a town in north County Kildare, Ireland. It is within the townland of Curryhills, at the junction of the R403 and R408 regional roads, about from Dublin. Founded in the late 18th century, its 2016 population was 2,333, making it the 14th largest town in County Kildare. History The English name of Prosperous was given when the village was founded in the late 18th century by Sir Robert Brooke. The village takes its Irish name from the townland lying to the east, ''Corrchoill'' or ''an Chorrchoill'' (meaning "the smooth forest"), anglicised variously as Corr ill Curr ill and Curryhills. An alternative meaning is "The wood of the small round hill" 4 and this makes sense topographically as there is a low hill immediately to the east of the village. Laois GAA
The Laois County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) ( ga, Cumann Luthchleas Gael Coiste Laois) or Laois GAA is one of the 32 county boards of the GAA in Ireland, and is responsible for Gaelic games in County Laois. The county board is also responsible for the Laois county teams. The county football team contested the second ever All-Ireland Senior Football Championship (SFC) final in 1889. In 1926, the county won the final of the first National Football League competition, defeating Dublin. 1936 brought the team's only other appearance in an All-Ireland SFC decider. Tommy Murphy (Gaelic Footballer)
Tommy Murphy (1920–1985) was a Gaelic footballer from County Laois. Biography Tommy Murphy was born in Graiguecullen, County Laois on 5 November 1920. He was educated in the nearby Knockbeg College in Carlow. Murphy played for the Laois Minors when he was just 15 and came to prominence in 1937 when he played his first senior championship match against Offaly. Despite being only a 16-year-old schoolboy, Murphy lined out against Kerry in the All-Ireland SFC semi-final that same year. During the late 1930s and 1940s Murphy was a household name all over Ireland. He won Leinster provincial medals in 1937, 1938, and 1946. In all Murphy won eight Laois Senior Football Championship medals and various Railway Cup medals for Leinster. His last game for Laois was against Wexford in the 1953 Championship and two years later he played the last game for his club, Graiguecullen. Jim Byrne (Gaelic Footballer)
James Byrne (born 15 April 1890) was an Irish Gaelic football administrator, referee and player who enjoyed a lengthy career as a left corner-back with the Wexford senior team. He joined the team in 1913 and was a regular member of the starting fifteen until 1925. Kennelly is regarded as one of Wexford's greatest-ever players. He won four consecutive All-Ireland winners' medals and seven Leinster winners' medals. An All-Ireland runner-up on two occasions, Byrne captained the team to the All-Ireland title in 1918. In team sport, captain is a title given to a member of the team. The title is frequently honorary, but in some cases the captain may have significant responsibility for strategy and teamwork while the game is in progress on the field.
