Larry Ochs (musician)
Larry Ochs (born May 3, 1949 in New York City) is an American jazz saxophonist, co-founder of the Rova Saxophone Quartet and Metalanguage Records. Ochs studied trumpet briefly but concentrated on tenor and sopranino saxophones. He worked as a record producer and founded his own label, Metalanguage Records in 1978, in addition to operating the Twelve Stars studio in California. He co-founded the Rova Saxophone Quartet and worked in Glenn Spearman's Double Trio. A frequent recipient of commissions, he composed the music for the play ''Goya's L.A.'' by Leslie Scalapino in 1994 and for the film '' Letters Not About Love'', which was named best documentary at SXSW in 1998. He has played in a new music trio called Room and the What We Live ensemble. He has recorded several albums as a leader. Mystery Project
''Mystery Project'' is the first album by American jazz saxophonist Glenn Spearman Double Trio, which was recorded in 1992 and released on the Italian Black Saint label. Background The concept of the Double Trio was born at Oakland Improvisers Festival in 1990. Saxophonist Larry Ochs was at the festival with his trio Room, with pianist Chris Brown and percussionist William Winant. Spearman was appearing with bassist Ben Lindgren and drummer Donald Robinson. Tzadik Records is a record label in New York City that specializes in avant-garde and experimental music. The label was established by composer and saxophonist John Zorn in 1995. Miya Masaoka
Miya Masaoka (born 1958, Washington, DC) is an American composer, musician, and sound artist active in the field of contemporary classical music and experimental music. Her work encompasses contemporary classical composition, improvisation, electroacoustic music, inter-disciplinary sound art, sound installation, traditional Japanese instruments, and performance art. She is based in New York City. Masaoka often performs on a 21-string Japanese koto (musical instrument), which she extends with software processing, string preparations, and bowing. She has created performance works and installations incorporating plants, live insects, and sensor technology. Her full-length ballet was performed at the Venice Biennale 2004. Joan Jeanrenaud
Joan Jeanrenaud ( Dutcher; born January 25, 1956) is an American cellist. A native of Memphis, Tennessee, she played with the LLP Kronos Quartet from 1978 until 1999, when, after a sabbatical, she left to pursue a solo career and collaborations with other artists, in part due to being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. She has staged and recorded solo performance pieces, playing the cello in tandem with electronic instruments. Her first solo album, ''Metamorphosis'', was described by Greg Cahill in ''Strings'' as "visceral, hypnotic, and often compelling." Jeanrenaud plays a Deconet, ca. 1750. A copy of the cello carved out of ice was used in her four-hour performance piece ''Ice Cello'', a 2004 adaptation of Charlotte Moorman's ''Ice Music for London''. In 2008, her album ''Strange Toys'' (Talking House Records, 2008) was nominated for a Grammy Award. Lyn Hejinian
Lyn Hejinian (born May 17, 1941) is an American poet, essayist, translator and publisher. She is often associated with the Language poets and is known for her landmark work ''My Life'' (Sun & Moon, 1987, original version Burning Deck, 1980), as well as her book of essays, ''The Language of Inquiry'' (University of California Press, 2000). Life Hejinian was born in the San Francisco Bay Area and lives in Berkeley, California, with her husband, composer/musician Larry Ochs. She has published over a dozen books of poetry and numerous books of essays as well as two volumes of translations of the Russian poet Arkadii Dragomoshchenko.
