Larry Nestor
Laurence F. Nestor (on ASCAP, he spells his first name Laurance)(born January 29, 1940) is a singer, songwriter, author from River Grove Illinois. Nestor is a member of the American Federation of Musicians and the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers. Career as musician Nestor played keyboards for a short time for The Buckinghams in the early years after the original keyboard player, Dennis Miccolis, left shortly after the Chess Studio recording sessions of Kind of a Drag. Nestor was eventually replaced by Marty Grebb before The Buckinghams hit the charts with Don't You Care, Susan and Hey Baby. Songwriting Nestor's songwriting career started in 1962 while still in high school. He was a staff songwriter at Chicago label One-derful Records. River Grove is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 10,612 at the 2020 census. Geography River Grove is located at (41.925830, -87.840135). According to the 2010 census, River Grove has a total area of , all land. History Just as nearby Elmwood Park and Oak Park are named after their historic elm and oak trees, River Grove gets its two-part name first from the community's shallow, muddy Des Plaines River, and second from the majestic groves of American ash trees lining shore of the river's "bottomland." Credit goes to the village's early German and Nordic settlers who, already holding a great reverence for the "mystic ash" through old world traditions, felt that they were home again among the familiar groves of ash trees, "just like the ones they left behind." The Buckinghams
The Buckinghams are an American sunshine pop band from Chicago. They formed in 1966 and went on to become one of the top-selling acts of 1967, charting their only five top 40 hits in the U.S. that year. The band dissolved in 1970, but re-formed in 1980 and they continue to tour throughout the United States. History In 1965, guitarists Carl Giammarese and Nick Fortuna, along with bassist Curtis Bachman, were invited to join a band called the Centuries. Giammarese and Bachman, plus keyboardist Dennis Miccolis, later became members of another band, the Pulsations, whose members included drummer John Poulos and vocalists George LeGros and Dennis Tufano. After winning a local battle of the bands competition in late 1965, the Pulsations secured a job as the house band on WGN-TV's variety show called ''All-Time Hits''. Kind Of A Drag
"Kind of a Drag" is a song written by Jim Holvay and recorded by the Buckinghams. It was the title track of their debut LP. The single reached #1 on the U.S. Hot 100 in February 1967, becoming the first #1 single within the new calendar year, remaining in the top position for two weeks, earning a gold disc. It was the first of the band's three Top 10 hits in 1967, among five total Top 40 hits for that year. Holvay was Chicago-based and had been performing with a group called The Mob. The co-producers of "Kind of a Drag" were the band's first personal manager Carl Bonafede and big band leader Dan Belloc, owner of the Holiday Ballroom in Chicago. The arranger of the horn sound was Frank Tesinsky. The engineer at the first recording sessions held at Chess Records in Chicago was Ron Malo, who also mixed the final recording. One-derful Records
One-derful Records was an independent R&B and soul label based in Chicago. Founded by George Leaner (June 1, 1917 – September 18, 1983) in 1962, One-derful was one of the few black-owned labels in Chicago until its demise in 1968. The label is most known for the release of "Shake a Tail Feather" by the Five Du-Tones in 1963. Other artist on the label included the Sharpees, McKinley Mitchell, Alvin Cash, and Harold Burrage. A few subsidiary labels were launched: Mar-V-Lus, M-Pac, Halo, and Midas Records. History A native of Mississippi, George Leaner relocated to Chicago with his family. His uncle, Al Benson, became an influential disc jockey in Chicago. Phil Orsi
Phil Orsi (born June 14, 1939) is an American singer, songwriter, producer and musician. Early life Orsi was born and grew up in Chicago, Illinois. His passion for music began with the gift of a small radio from his grandmother. Orsi's father owned an Italian food and liquor store on 26th and Princeton streets on the city's south side. In the early 1960s the neighborhoods were razed en masse so that construction of the Dan Ryan Expressway could begin. The family moved the business (Orsi & Sons) to a new location at 59 East 18th street. The store was nearby Chicago's "Record Row" on South Michigan Avenue. Musicians from studios such as Chess Records would stop by at Orsi & Sons for lunch. Young Phil Orsi soon became friends with Muddy Waters and Willie Dixon.
