Larapinta Drive
Larapinta Drive is a designated state route in the Northern Territory of Australia. It runs in a westerly direction from Alice Springs to the community of Hermannsburg and then continues to Kings Canyon in the Watarrka National Park. After Kings Canyon, the road continues to the south to the Lasseter Highway as the Luritja Road. Its route includes a number of tourist attractions such as the Alice Springs Desert Park, West MacDonnell National Park, monuments dedicated to Aboriginal artist Albert Namatjira and Royal Flying Doctor Service founder John Flynn, as well as Albert Namatjira's house near Hermannsburg. Gillen, Northern Territory
Gillen is a suburb of the town of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory, Australia. The suburb is named after "FJ Gillen and Mt Gillen in the MacDonnell Ranges" and ultimately derived from the anthropologist Francis James Gillen, who was the telegraphist and station master at Alice Springs in 1892. Finke River
The Finke River, or ''Larapinta'' (Arrernte), is a river in central Australia, one of four main rivers of the Lake Eyre Basin and thought to be the oldest riverbed in the world. It flows for only a few days a year and when this happens, its water usually disappears into the sands of the Simpson Desert, rarely if ever reaching Lake Eyre. Geography The source of the Finke River is in the Northern Territory's MacDonnell Ranges which flows through central Australia, the name Finke River is first applied at the confluence of the Davenport and Ormiston Creeks, just north of Mount Zeil. Western Aranda
Arrernte or Aranda (; ) or sometimes referred to as Upper Arrernte (Upper Aranda), is a dialect cluster in the Arandic language group spoken in parts of the Northern Territory, Australia, by the Arrernte people. Other spelling variations are Arunta or Arrarnta, and all of the dialects have multiple other names. There are about 1,800 speakers of Eastern/Central Arrernte, making this dialect one of the widest spoken of any Indigenous language in Australia, the one usually referred to as Arrernte and the one described in detail below. It is spoken in the Alice Springs area and taught in schools and universities, heard in media and used in local government. The second biggest dialect in the group is Alyawarre. John Flynn (minister)
John Flynn (25 November 18805 May 1951) was an Australian Presbyterian minister who founded the Australian Inland Mission (AIM) which later separated into Frontier Services and the Presbyterian Inland Mission, as well as founding what became the Royal Flying Doctor Service, the world's first air ambulance. Early life Educated at Snake Valley, Sunshine and Braybrook primary schools, he matriculated from University High School in Parkville in Melbourne, aged 18. Unable to finance a university course, he became a pupil-teacher with the Victorian Education Department and developed interests in photography and first aid. In 1903 he began training for the ministry through an extra-mural course for 'student lay pastors', serving meanwhile in pioneering districts of Beech Forest and Buchan. The Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS), commonly known as the Flying Doctor, is an air medical service in Australia. It is a non-profit organisation that provides emergency and primary health care services for those living in rural, remote and regional areas of Australia who cannot access a hospital or general practice due to the vast distances of the Outback. It is one of the largest and most comprehensive aeromedical organisations in the world.
