Lapstone
Lapstone is a township on the eastern escarpment of the Blue Mountains in New South Wales, Australia. Elevation 160 m (525 ft). Lapstone is located 62 kilometres west of the Sydney CBD in the local government area of the City of Blue Mountains and is part of the federal electorate of Macquarie. Lapstone consists mostly of stand-alone housing and has a few public facilities. At the , Lapstone had a population of 961 people. Lapstone was originally bought and developed by Mr Arthur J Hand, an Alderman of the Blue Mountains City Council. Lapstone is the first town in the easternmost escarpment of the Blue Mountains. Its name comes from the many water worn stones in the area that resemble those used by cobblers to work the leather when making shoes. Knapsack Viaduct
The Lapstone Zig Zag was a zig zag railway built between and stations on the Main Western line of New South Wales in Australia. Constructed between 1863 and 1865 to overcome an otherwise insurmountable climb up the eastern side of the Blue Mountains, the zig zag and associated Knapsack Viaduct, a sandstone arch viaduct, were designed by John Whitton, Engineer-in-Charge of New South Wales Government Railways, and were built by William Watkins. The zig zag was listed on the Blue Mountains local government heritage register on 27 December 1991; while the adjacent Knapsack Viaduct was listed on the New South Wales Heritage Database on 2 April 1999. The Lapstone ZigZag was the world-first ZigZag constructed on any main-line railway. The ruling grade was already very steep at 1 in 33 (3%). Great Western Highway
Great Western Highway (also known as Broadway from to , Parramatta Road from Chippendale to , and Church Street through Parramatta) is a state highway in New South Wales, Australia. From east to west, the highway links Sydney with Bathurst, on the state's Central Tablelands. Route The eastern terminus of Great Western Highway is at Railway Square, at the intersection of Broadway with Quay Street, in the inner-city suburb of Haymarket and just south of the Sydney CBD. From Railway Square, the highway follows Broadway south and west, to the intersection with City Road (Princes Highway), where the highway changes name to Parramatta Road and heads generally west towards Parramatta. Lennox Bridge, Glenbrook
The Lennox Bridge, Glenbrook is a heritage-listed road bridge that carries the Mitchell's Pass across Brookside Creek (also known as Lapstone Creek), located at Glenbrook, in the City of Blue Mountains local government area of New South Wales, Australia. The bridge was designed by David Lennox and built from 1832 to 1833 by James Randall and other convicts. It is also known as Lennox Bridge or The Horseshoe Bridge. The property is owned by Blue Mountains City Council. It was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 2 April 1999. Lapstone Oval
Lapstone Oval is a sports precinct in Lapstone, New South Wales. It supports sport all year round. The name Lapstone Oval covers all of the 3 different types of sporting facilities and not just the rugby field as is thought by some people, however the mightiest club in Subbies Rugby calls Lapstone Oval home. It is known to many opposition teams as the Graveyard; as many teams come to the foot of the mountains to be buried by the mighty Blue Men. Curator Matthew Lehn welcomes opposing teams with "welcome to the Graveyard" Facilities There are a few features at Lapstone Oval. * A rugby union field * 16 netball courts (10 are asphalt and the other 6 are grass) * 2 tennis courts which overlook the rugby field and half of the grass netball courts * A small play area for younger children During the winter months there is a canteen running at the bottom of the netball club-house and a BBQ on the grass next to it. John Whitton
John Whitton (1820, near Wakefield, Yorkshire, England – 20 February 1898), an Anglo–Australian railway engineer, was the Engineer-in-Charge for the New South Wales Government Railways, serving between 1856 and 1890, considered the Father of New South Wales Railways. Under his supervision, it is estimated that of railway around New South Wales and Victoria were completed. Whitton was responsible for the construction of parts of the Main Western railway line, in particular the section over the Blue Mountains and the Lithgow Zig Zag, and much of the Main Southern railway line. Biography Indentured in England, Whitton gained extensive railway engineering experience prior to his arrival in the Colony of New South Wales in 1856. Blue Mountains Line
The Blue Mountains Line (BMT) is an inter urban commuter rail service operated by NSW TrainLink serving the Blue Mountains region of New South Wales, Australia. The line travels west from Sydney to the major town of Katoomba and on to Mount Victoria, Lithgow and Bathurst. Mount Victoria is the terminus for most electric services, but some services terminate at Lithgow instead. Two express services per day in each direction, known as the Bathurst Bullet, extend to the regional city of Bathurst, which is supplemented by road coaches connecting Bathurst to Lithgow. Due to electrification limits at Lithgow, the Bathurst Bullet is run using the Endeavour railcars, which operate on diesel. John Lucas (Australian Politician)
John Lucas (24 June 1818 – 1 March 1902) was a builder and politician in colonial New South Wales, a member of both the Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council. Early life Lucas was born on 24 June 1818 at Kingston, part of , to John Lucas, a miller and builder, and Mary Rowley, a daughter of Thomas Rowley. He was educated at a Church of England school in Liverpool, and Captain Beveridge's boarding school. He left school to be apprenticed as a carpenter, the trade of his grandfather Nathaniel Lucas. Political career He first stood for the Legislative Assembly at the 1859 election for Canterbury, but was unsuccessful. He won the seat at the 1860 by-election, holding it at the 1860 general election. In December 1864 he was elected to both Canterbury, and Hartley, choosing to represent Hartley. Metroad 4
The A4 and M4 is an arterial route in Sydney, Australia. It connects the Inner West of Sydney with the outer western suburbs. It used to be Metroad 4, which was a Metroad in Sydney. The A4/M4 mostly follows what was previously National Route 32 from the Western Distributor in the CBD, west to the Great Western Highway (Route 32) at Lapstone. Both the A4 and M4 sections were known as Metroad 4 until 2013, which in turn replaced the previous Sydney stretch of National Route 32 in September 1992. The names "M4" and "A4" are just the route allocations for the route as a whole. In fact, the A4/M4 route runs along a whole series of roads. RAAF Base Glenbrook
RAAF Base Glenbrook is a Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) base located in Glenbrook, New South Wales, Glenbrook, in the Lower Blue Mountains (New South Wales), Blue Mountains, approximately west of the Sydney central business district in New South Wales, Australia. The base serves as home to Headquarters Air Command of the RAAF. There is no airfield although it has a heliport, or helicopter landing site (HLS) and most administrative services are located on the nearby RAAF Base Richmond. Parts of the site are New South Wales State Heritage Register, heritage-listed and comprise the Officers' Mess, once the Hotel. During World War Two, men stationed at the base co-ordinated the stockpiling of mustard gas in the Glenbrook Tunnel (1892), disused Glenbrook railway tunnel.
