Levens, Alpes-Maritimes
Levens (; it, Levenzo) is a commune in the Alpes-Maritimes ''département'' in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region in southeastern France. Its inhabitants are called ''Levensans'' (or Levensois). Origin and evolution of the name There are three possible explanations of the origin of the name: *From the name of the ''Leponti'' tribe, which was changed to ''Leventi'' during the Roman period; *From the name of a notable Roman figure, ''Laevinus''; *From the Ligurian word stem ''lev'', indicating a sloping landscape; Geography The village, built on high rocky ground, is located at an altitude of 600 metres. Èze
Èze (; oc, Esa; it, Eza) is a seaside commune in the Alpes-Maritimes department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region in Southeastern France. It is located on the French Riviera, 8.5 km (5.2 mi) to the northeast of Nice and 4.5 km (2.7 mi) to the west of Monaco. In 2018, Èze had a population of 2,225. Its inhabitants are known as ''Ezasques'' (masculine and feminine). History The area surrounding Èze was first populated around 200 BC as a commune situated near Mount Bastide. The earliest occurrence of the name "Èze" can be found in the maritime books of Antonin as a bay called the St. Laurent of Èze. A hoard of ancient Greek silver phialae dating from the 3rd century BC was found in Èze in the late nineteenth century and is now part of the British Museum's collection. La Gaude
La Gaude (; oc, La Gauda) is a commune in the Alpes-Maritimes department in southeastern France. History To the south of the village, a restored Roman stele is close to the Aurelian Way, the Roman road that passed near the present cultural centre. After the Saracen attacks in the ninth century, the inhabitants of the nearby and higher village of Saint-Jeannet descended to the more fertile and less rugged La Gaude area. "La Gauda" is mentioned in 1075. Soon the village was burned for having converted to the Cathar heresy. When the frontier became the nearby River Var, the village was again destroyed. The village was affected by the plague in the fifteenth century and abandoned until the late sixteenth century. La Gaude became an independent community in 1599, separating from Saint Jeannet. Métropole Nice Côte d'Azur is the ''métropole'', an intercommunal structure, centred on the city of Nice. It is located in the Alpes-Maritimes department, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, southeastern France. It was created in December 2011, replacing the previous ''Communauté urbaine Nice Côte d'Azur'' and the communautés de communes of les stations du Mercantour, La Tinée and Vésubie-Mercantour. In 2013 the commune Coaraze left the métropole, and in 2014 the communes Bonson, Le Broc, Gattières and Gilette joined it. In January 2022 the communes Drap and Châteauneuf-Villevieille joined the métropole. Its area is 1479.7 km2. Colomars
Colomars (Nissart: Couloumas) is a commune in the Alpes-Maritimes ''département'' in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region in southeastern France. Inhabitants of Colomars are called ''Colomarsois''. Coaraze
Coaraze (; oc, Coarasa) is a commune in the Alpes-Maritimes department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region in southeastern France. Geography Coaraze is a small village in the Nice hinterland, in the valley of the River Paillon. The closest town is Contes, away. The village itself is built on a sandstone mount at the foot of Mount Férion (1,414 metres or high).
