Lantern (1861–1864) was an Australian racehorse who won the 1864 Melbourne Cup and Victoria Derby. Racing career In the Melbourne Cup Lantern started at odds of 15/1 and won in a time of 3 minutes 52 seconds, the slowest ever recorded for the race. Sweetmeat (horse)
Sweetmeat (foaled 1842) was a successful English Thoroughbred racehorse that won 16 consecutive races (including walk-overs) as a three-year-old, including the Doncaster Gold Cup, and was a useful sire of the early 19th century. Background He was a bay or brown colt foaled in 1842 that was sired by Gladiator, who became an important sire in France. Sweetmeat’s dam, Lollypop was sired by either Starch or Voltaire, as recorded in the General Stud Book, with Voltaire listed in second position, which indicates he was the last stallion to cover the mare and therefore the most likely sire of Lollypop. If Lollypop was indeed by Voltaire she was incestuously inbred to Blacklock, who was the sire of both Voltaire and Belinda (the dam of Lollypop). The Melbourne Cup is a Thoroughbred horse race held in Melbourne, Australia. It is a 3200-metre race for three-year-olds and over, conducted by the Victoria Racing Club on the Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne, Victoria as part of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival. It is the richest "two-mile" handicap in the world and one of the richest turf races. The event starts at 3:00 pm on the first Tuesday of November and is known locally as "the race that stops the nation". The Melbourne Cup has a long tradition, with the first race held in 1861. Victoria Derby
The Victoria Derby, also known as the Penfolds Victoria Derby, is a Victoria Racing Club Group 1 Thoroughbred horse race for three-year-olds held under Set Weights conditions over a distance of 2,500 metres at Flemington Racecourse, in Melbourne, Australia scheduled annually on the first day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival. Total prize money for the race is A$2,000,000. History Originally run at a distance of miles, in 1972 it was changed to 2,400 metres to conform to the metric system. It was changed again in 1973 to its present distance of 2,500 metres. First run in 1855, the first three editions were won by fillies but the last time a filly won was in 1923 when Frances Tressady claimed victory. 1864 Melbourne Cup
The 1864 Melbourne Cup was a two-mile handicap horse race which took place on Thursday, 3 November 1864. This year was the fourth running of the Melbourne Cup. Lantern carried just 6st 3 lb (39.5 kg) to defeat Poet and Rose of Denmark finished third. The race was run in heavy going and Lantern's time of 3 minutes and 52 second equaled the 1861 Melbourne Cup for the slowest winning time. Lantern then became the first horse to win the Cup and the VRC Derby in the same year though unlike today the Derby was run after the Cup. The Derby was run a day after the Cup and after winning there he returned to win over a mile the next day to win three races in three straight days.
